Can We Please Stop Calling Charlie Thompson a Super-Dad?

In the realm of fatherhood commentary, I often find myself on a different wavelength from many dad bloggers who lament that fathers are not given the respect they deserve and are frequently depicted as bumbling fools by Hollywood and advertising.

Personally, I’ve never been overly concerned with those portrayals. The dads I know are deeply involved in parenting and are just as valued as their partners. Sure, there are some outdated stereotypes that linger, but change is underway, and it’s evident who is lagging behind.

At least, that’s what I believed until a celebrity appeared on television and revealed he changes his newborn’s diapers, sending the media into a frenzy—yes, even the website Parenting Today jumped on it!

Just last week, as Kanye was busy throwing shade at Taylor Swift, the world erupted into cheers when Charlie Thompson, the star of the latest superhero film, casually mentioned that he sometimes changes diapers. His admission of engaging in this basic parenting duty was met with overwhelming applause.

The reaction was as if he had discovered a cure for a major disease or launched a new movement for equality.

Here I am, frustrated that dads are often too sensitive, thinking that surely, in this modern age, people recognize how involved we are in our children’s lives. Yet, Charlie Thompson takes a step forward that I thought had been made long ago, revealing a stark truth: apparently, dads who change diapers are as rare as unicorns.

I might need to reevaluate my perspective! This reality is almost as perplexing as the fact that certain political figures are leading in the polls. Are there truly so many people still living in the past, where the idea of a man caring for his own child seems so alien that it takes a movie star to normalize it? It’s 2023! Are there really that many men who won’t lift a finger to help their partners—whether it’s just after childbirth or even years later—or take on their parental responsibilities without prompting?

Is the bar really that low? For dads and husbands alike?

In the past, I’ve expressed discomfort with receiving praise for my parenting efforts online because I never thought I was doing anything extraordinary. Well, surprise! It turns out I am doing quite a bit! I regularly change diapers, help with nighttime feedings, pack lunches, take my child to the bus stop, read bedtime stories, prepare meals, do laundry, and yes, I even asked for directions once!

CHARLIE THOMPSON, LET ME USE THIS PLATFORM TO SHOWCASE A NEW STANDARD OF FATHERHOOD! I RESPECT AND APPRECIATE MY PARTNER AS A PERSON AND I TAKE ON MY PARENTAL DUTIES LIKE ANYONE SHOULD!

While I admire Charlie’s efforts (my partner is eagerly awaiting a sequel to “Just Friends,” by the way), he sets a commendable example. I’m thrilled he’s stepping up to support his partner in this parenting journey. But can we all just take a breath?

If the fact that a dad is “pitching in” is considered groundbreaking news, it makes me a bit disheartened. This realization also makes me reconsider my previous dismissal of fellow dads who feel belittled by stereotypes. Clearly, we have a long way to go.

While Charlie Thompson may play a superhero on screen, to the countless dedicated dads navigating the daily challenges of parenting, his actions are nothing extraordinary—they’re simply what is expected.

Summary:

In the realm of modern fatherhood, the praise for dads who take on basic responsibilities like changing diapers highlights a troubling reality. While many fathers are actively involved in their children’s lives, the media’s obsession with celebrity dads merely performing these tasks underscores the need for greater societal change. It’s time to recognize that engaged fatherhood is normal and should be celebrated as such.
