An Open Letter to the Third Trimester

Dear Third Trimester of Pregnancy,

Let’s get straight to the point: you can be quite the challenge. Every expectant mother eagerly anticipates your arrival, only to find you saying, “Welcome! You still have 12 weeks to go, and by the way, your belly is about to grow significantly.”

Wait a minute. Twelve weeks? That translates to roughly three months—about 90 days. That’s an eternity filled with sleepless nights, frequent trips to the bathroom, and the added joy of unexpected leg cramps. It’s no wonder you’re not the most popular trimester out there. You become the seemingly endless stretch of pregnancy where the desire for a simple night out with friends and a glass of wine feels like a distant memory. It’s hard to feel like your usual self when you’re battling mood swings and fatigue. You become the observer, watching others enjoy life while your little one inside you is kicking away at your bladder, all while trying to radiate that “glow.”

Twelve more weeks of this. And everyone seems to have the same advice: “Just relax! Take it easy and put your feet up.” Sure, you’re growing a human, and that’s a valid reason to take care of yourself, but it’s not that simple when your ribs feel like they’re being squeezed by a watermelon. When comfort is out of the question, you know the end is near.

Sure, the first trimester brought its own set of challenges, and the second was marked by discomfort, but at least most of my clothes still fit. Then you arrive, dear Third Trimester, and suddenly my maternity clothes are too snug, leaving me with an awkward underbelly situation. Yes, my maternity jeans are now more constricting than I’d like to admit. It’s a real dilemma—do I invest in larger clothes that I’ll only use for a few weeks? But let’s be honest: 12 weeks is still a long time to feel uncomfortable. So, online shopping ensues, leading to a splurge on new maternity outfits. And why not throw in a stylish handbag? I’ve saved enough money by skipping cocktails and sushi over the past several months, and unlike maternity clothes, handbags always fit.

Now, I could delve into the various discomforts that plague the body during these final weeks, but I’ll spare you the details. Let’s just say that one of my greatest fears has become sneezing, especially with a bowling ball pressing down on my bladder during this pregnancy.

Third Trimester, I’m not wishing you away; I just want you to speed up. I’ve made it through you three times before, and despite my doubts and the countless false alarms, you eventually come to an end. You don’t last forever. But, let’s be honest, you are quite the challenge. And since I’m currently pregnant and hormonal, I’ll stick with this sentiment. You’re a tough cookie that I love to complain about, yet I know that enduring you means I’m closer to meeting my baby. For that reason, you and all your quirks are worth it.

Only 90 days left. Bring it on—just be gentle with me. I’m seven years older than when we first met.

Sincerely,
An (Impatient) Mama-to-Be
