10 Inner Thoughts Moms Keep to Themselves (Usually)

If only you could tap into our minds for a second… but trust me, you’d be thankful you can’t! Picture the revelations about our fondness for the fellow moms in the carpool line, our appreciation for the efficient clerks at the local store, and our exasperation at picking up after partners who struggle to find the laundry basket, dishwasher, or even the toilet. You’d also catch a glimpse of the thoughts we often keep from our children. Buckle up; here are ten musings moms have but rarely voice aloud (until they do):

  1. Right now, you’re my favorite. Well, at least for this moment! This morning, I was all about your sibling when you were wide awake at 5:30 a.m., while they were still snoozing. Yes, we all play favorites sometimes; it’s often just a fleeting moment of affection. Kids can indeed be adorable… when they’re asleep.
  2. Can you actually be that ______? Fill in the blank. It’s hard to believe what we witness sometimes. Whether they’re attempting a daring leap from a dresser to their bed or asking a question that might seem a tad… foolish (there, I said it), we’ve all experienced moments when we pause and think, “What in the world?”
  3. You little ______! Yes, you can imagine the term of endearment we’re thinking of isn’t “sweetheart” or “darling.” But don’t worry—only the angel on your shoulder is judging you for those fleeting thoughts.
  4. I’m leaving and not coming back. Some of us have voiced this more than once (raises hand!). Motherhood can feel overwhelming. Thankfully, we have highlights: the start of school, the end of holiday chaos, and visits to grandma’s. Before you run away like you’re in a dramatic movie, remember they’ll soon grow up and leave home. Cherish these moments.
  5. I’m too tired for this today. A wake-up time of 4 a.m. should be reserved for ER doctors, not moms. We’re not making those kind of bucks! Kids, please let us sleep until at least 6 a.m.
  6. Why can’t you be more like ______? We know we shouldn’t compare our kids with others, yet in stressful times, we falter. It’s easy to wonder why our child can’t be more like their seemingly perfect cousin, little Bobby. But remember, while your child is having a meltdown in the mall, little Bobby is likely busy with his own antics. Kids are kids—no one is perfect, except for yours, just as they are.
  7. Your breath is something else. Everyone gets morning breath, but not every child gets to brush their teeth on their own—especially that 3-year-old who spent the night snoring with their mouth open and is now right in your face reciting the ABCs at 4 a.m. Where’s that rooster when you need one?
  8. Get your own snack, kid! Can’t we enjoy our treats in peace? The answer is no when kids are around. They seem to think your food is their food. Next time one of them reaches for your sandwich, channel your inner lioness and give them a playful growl.
  9. I want my mom! No matter how old you get, there’s always that longing for your own mother, especially during chaotic times like when a gallon of milk has just been spilled, dinner is burning, and two kids are sick on the couch. Mom’s name? It’s comfort.
  10. Go to bed already. Enough said.

While it’s vital to consider your words before speaking, remember that kids have a knack for repeating what they hear.
