As a parent, I recognize the privilege of providing meals for my children every evening. However, there are moments when dinner feels less like a blessing and more like a trial. At times, I find myself wishing for an escape from the seemingly endless negotiations over food. Here are eight thoughts that frequently cross my mind during these mealtime adventures:

How long can a piece of food linger in a child’s mouth? Please, for the love of all that is good, just swallow that chicken before I lose my sanity. If I have to watch you chew any longer, I might just pull my hair out. -
What Happened to Your Favorite?
Didn’t you just declare this dish the best thing ever last week? Why is it suddenly on your hate list? In my experience, when I love something, I can’t get enough of it—even if it’s served constantly. -
Seriously, That Smells Bad?
How can you turn your nose up at the scent of delicious fried chicken? What could possibly make a slice of pizza seem unappealing? It’s just bread, sauce, and cheese—deliciousness in my book! -
Full After Three Bites?
Just moments ago, you claimed you were starving, and now you can’t finish your meal after three bites? I need to bottle that phenomenon. When I’m hungry, I can eat until I’m nearly bursting. -
Food Can’t Touch?
So, a single speck of mashed potato on your chicken means the entire meal is ruined? And ketchup has contaminated everything, even if I wipe it off? Where are my keys? This is absurd. -
I’m Actually Doing This.
I’m really picking through your food to remove every tiny piece of green just because you’re picky. You’re asking for a new meal over a chopped scallion? I’m determined to make you eat this, no matter how humiliating it gets. -
Let Them Be Done?
I hear you, Grandma. I know you believe kids will eat when they’re hungry. But when they skip meals and turn into little monsters at the mall, I could use your support, not your judgment. -
You Don’t Want Dessert?
I’m not upset that you don’t want that chocolate mousse cake; I’m just baffled. How is it possible to turn down a guilt-free dessert? You have the option to indulge without any consequences, yet you choose not to. Kudos to you, my little champion.
Despite the challenges, I will continue to provide healthy meals and encourage my children to eat until they no longer need my assistance. Someday, when they come home from college lamenting their weight gain, I’ll remind them of the days I had to plead for them to eat. We’ll share a laugh over it, perhaps while enjoying some ice cream together.
