Today, my infant transformed into a little boy. Although I hadn’t fully recognized the gradual change, it had been unfolding for some time. His movements were evolving, his posture, his facial expressions, and his stride all exhibited subtle differences. It was as if I witnessed this transformation in real-time, yet somehow it slipped past me. Isn’t that the nature of parenthood?

Earlier, I nursed my little one before his nap, and as we finished—perhaps for the last time—I could sense a shift. As he rested in my arms, the realization hit me: my baby had been replaced by a little boy. His disheveled hair, elongated limbs, and lean physique had taken the place of the chubby form I had grown accustomed to. There was no denying it.

So, I decided to hold him a bit longer today. I cradled him like the little boy he’s become: his head resting heavily on my shoulder, his weight now more substantial. I allowed him to sleep there, savoring the moment, knowing that as long as I remained still, I could momentarily freeze time. However, I knew that eventually, I would have to set him down, and in that instant, the ability to pause would disappear. He would continue to grow, and before long, he would be a teenager and then a man.

Everyone advises to cherish these early years. It’s true—they grow quickly. Yet, this statement feels paradoxical; in the daily routine, time often seems to drag. A simple meal can stretch endlessly, a sleepless night can feel eternal. Yet, the truth remains: they grow so fast.

Thus, I long to keep him in my embrace just a bit longer today, for my baby is already a memory. A little boy stands in his place now, and soon an older boy will follow, and then a young man. So, I continue to hold him: heavy on my shoulder, the weight of him significant, in his nursery where time appears to stop.
