No Apologies: The Journey of a Mom with a Teenager

Let’s get real: I’m not apologizing for putting our dog outside more often than you’d like. I promised you a furry friend and kept my word, but let’s face it—I’m the one who deals with the aftermath. Your joy when we brought Lizzie home, swaddled in that tiny yellow blanket, made every hair and mess worth it. Watching you shower her with love each day reminds me of the endless capacity for affection. I’ll never regret adopting her, even if it means a little extra cleaning on my part.

And yes, I hear your groans about the ice cream situation. You adore it, and honestly, I might as well invest in Turner Dairy at this point. But let’s be honest, my own love for that sweet treat might contribute to our frequent shortages. I’m not sorry, though, for feeding your ice cream cravings and suggesting spontaneous trips to Dairy Queen. If I can’t whip up desserts at home, I’ll gladly be the one to hand you a cone that brings a smile to your face.

I know I complain about your obsession with Everybody Loves Raymond. The endless marathons have me quoting lines in my sleep, and I’m pretty sure I could write a thesis on the laugh tracks by now. It’s amusing to see you shift from just enjoying the show to analyzing the inconsistencies, almost as if you’re planning to create your own YouTube segment on it. Yet, I’m not sorry for introducing you to this classic sitcom. Your unfiltered laughter is pure joy, and while you no longer giggle at my off-key singing of The Wiggles, I cherish our shared laughs over grown-up humor.

You’re now coming home from high school every afternoon. It’s hard to believe you’re not that little boy anymore, even if you still occasionally resemble the kid who dropped his Clifford book in the backseat. Your youthful face holds memories of simpler times, yet your eyes reveal a world of new thoughts—jobs, cars, and all that comes with growing up. I won’t apologize for the empty ice cream cartons or the scrapbooks left unfinished. Nope, not a chance. Watching you grow into your happiness is the most rewarding part of this journey.
