I was completely unprepared for the whirlwind of parenting when my daughter, Emma, arrived. It was the last thing on my mind that fateful June day when the pungent smell of seafood sent me rushing to the kitchen sink, feeling utterly miserable. Ah, the memories… In the following months, my preparations were minimal; I managed to buy a crib and install a car seat, but that was about it. When my partner, Mark, and I left the hospital, we were in disbelief that we could bring this seven-pound bundle of joy home. It felt like we were on a grand adventure.
Fast forward two years, and when Noah was born, we had gained some experience. We knew to start him off sleeping in his crib, and I made sure to introduce veggies before fruits to keep him from developing a sweet tooth too early. Target diapers became my go-to instead of Pampers, and I learned not to panic over every sniffle. I even picked up my first parenting book to help guide us along the way.
Another two years later, little Liam came into our lives. By then, I considered myself somewhat of an expert. I knew the dos and don’ts of parenting and was convinced that this would be my best-behaved child yet. But, along with that newfound knowledge came the reality of experience. Sure, I knew Liam should be in his own bed, but honestly, it’s just so much cozier to have him snuggled up next to me. Why bother cooking anything other than mac and cheese when I know that’s all he’ll devour? Ben didn’t master potty training until he was three, so why rush Liam through that process? You get the picture.
Most importantly, I’ve come to realize how quickly those precious baby days slip away. If I can hold on to those sweet snuggles and adorable baby babbles for just a little longer, I will. Because soon enough, my little one will grow into a big kid. And that’s something you just can’t fully appreciate with your first child.
