My Son’s Insightful Challenge to Kindness

“Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” This heartfelt inquiry arose during what should have been a routine visit to the dentist for my son, Liam’s semi-annual teeth cleaning.

Our family is fortunate to be surrounded by remarkable individuals; however, we often encounter those whose words and actions can inflict emotional harm. Public outings can be unpredictable, and we never know how others will respond.

At our dentist’s office, a team of dedicated professionals consistently goes above and beyond to accommodate individuals on the autism spectrum. While I anticipated a warm reception during Liam’s appointment, I was unprepared for the extraordinary interaction that unfolded.

Just moments after we arrived, a kind, grandmotherly woman entered the waiting area. She introduced herself and asked if she could engage with my son. Surprised yet pleased, I nodded in agreement. To my amazement, she adeptly drew Liam out of his shell, skillfully navigating his fidgety movements. She asked him thoughtful questions about his interests, from his favorite video games to his latest Lego creations, and even who he considered the best Marvel superhero. As his excitement grew, I instinctively moved to give him our discreet calming signal. However, the sweet lady gently stopped me, assuring me that it was wonderful to see him so joyful.

When it was time for his teeth cleaning, she leaned in close and whispered, “It’s okay. My grandson has autism too. Aren’t they the sweetest kids?” With that, she smiled warmly at me, offered a reassuring pat on the shoulder, and joined Liam as he headed to the treatment room.

On our way home, Liam asked, “Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” The genuine kindness he received from this stranger made such an impression that he urged me to share his message: everyone deserves to feel valued and respected.

Imagine if we all made a commitment to spread kindness and grace to those around us. What if we utilized our personal experiences to uplift others? What if we consciously became the individuals who instill hope in those who are struggling? What if we extended love to those who, in turn, may not show it back?

Consider offering a kind word of encouragement to someone who might be feeling overwhelmed or to simply smile at strangers instead of rushing through our day. What if we helped a parent managing a child’s public meltdown or assisted someone who is physically struggling? The act of being intentional about kindness can create profound ripples in our communities.

We are all familiar with the pain of unkindness, whether it comes from malice or ignorance. Conversely, we also know the uplifting effects of kindness and compassion. While harsh experiences can leave scars, positive interactions can act as a balm for our souls, healing wounds we may not even recognize.

As individuals who face unique challenges—whether due to illness, disability, or caring for those who do—we often feel depleted. Yet, when we remember the kindness shown to us or our loved ones, we may find an unexpected reservoir of strength. Life’s challenges can propel us to new heights of endurance.

Liam encourages you to accept the kindness challenge: to actively choose kindness, as every individual matters.

I am accepting this challenge. Will you join us?
