The Good Wife and Parenting: A Hilariously Awkward Encounter

I can’t help but point fingers at The Good Wife for a rather unforgettable moment in our household. Believe it or not, it was a rerun that sparked it all. My husband and I, inspired by an intense elevator scene from the show, decided to recreate the magic in our own family room one fateful evening. Potential lawsuit? Unlikely. Future therapy sessions? Let’s just say we might want to start saving for our daughter’s counseling fund.

“Mommy! Daddy! Where are your clothes?” Our eight-year-old daughter, Emma, burst in, giggling uncontrollably. Normally, the only interruptions during our intimate moments are the nagging thoughts in my mind—like what tasks I should tackle with my newfound free time, or what snack I’ll indulge in after we’re done. Am I alone in this?

It’s probably no shock that our love life is more of the once-a-week variety, save for a daring escapade in a department store stairwell last year (yes, I’ve piqued your interest!). It’s fulfilling, sure, and definitely brings us closer—though toe-curling moments are few and far between. That Sunday evening, however, was one of those rare instances devoid of grocery lists and to-do reminders. Just as we were getting into the moment, Emma, usually a sound sleeper, decided to wander down the stairs, looking for any excuse to interact with us.

In a split second, our innocent little girl was gazing into my wide-eyed panic. As she approached, her laughter bubbled over and she asked, “What are you doing?” My husband and I scrambled to grab pillows in a futile attempt to cover ourselves, urging her to head back upstairs while trying to suppress our own giggles.

After what felt like an eternity of laughter and awkwardness, she finally returned to her room, allowing us to breathe again and get dressed. Navigating this parenting dilemma was bound to draw us closer together—or lead to a serious spat. My husband suggested we simply deny the whole incident (ka-ching, there goes the therapy fund!), while I insisted on honesty. “We’ll tell her the truth,” I declared, attempting to maintain some semblance of confidence.

What transpired next was a whirlwind, but surprisingly one of my proudest moments as a parent. Cuddled on Emma’s fluffy comforter, we explained that Mommy and Daddy were making love, our clothes had ended up on the couch, and that it’s a natural way for adults to express their love for one another. After this candid explanation, I turned to her and, despite my internal alarm bells ringing, asked, “Do you have any questions?” Of course, she did.

“Why did you and Daddy have to be naked?” “Why were you sitting on Daddy’s lap?” and “Are you going to have a baby?” were just a few of her inquiries. Our thorough discussion of love-making and baby-making unfolded, and as she probed deeper, we took deep breaths and answered truthfully. What began as a potential disaster turned into a heartfelt connection, and I hoped it would remain a funny anecdote rather than a future therapy session.

We wrapped up our conversation with a gentle reminder: “Making love is fun and feels good. You might want to do it when you’re older and in love.” “Eww! I doubt that will happen, Mom,” she groaned, before giving us a sleepy hug and dismissing us from her room. Little did we know, The Good Wife would still be waiting for us to resume our evening.
