Throughout my life, I’ve had the immense joy of nurturing over a thousand children. They come from diverse backgrounds—some are black, some white; some are tall, others short; and they embody a myriad of identities—blue-eyed, pierced, gay, autistic, humorous, dramatic, brilliant, dyslexic, talented, transgender, outgoing, artistic, athletic, and everything in between.
I’ve witnessed their growth, from crafting their first sentence to standing tall in the face of challenges. I’ve shared in their grief, holding their hands during tough times and absorbing their sorrows. Countless early mornings and late nights have been spent ensuring they can take the next steps in their lives. I’ve stood firm with them, compelling them to confront reality and inspiring them to strive for their best selves.
Every day, my children present me with new challenges. Each one has unique needs, perspectives, and pains that require healing. It is a privilege to guide them in expressing their stories and nurturing their true selves in a world that often tells them they fall short. To me, they are more than enough—they have the potential to move mountains and create real change if that’s their desire. My unwavering belief in them sometimes feels like the only stability amidst the chaos and pain of the world.
I’ve weathered the relentless criticisms that insist my efforts are inadequate—questioning my methods and intentions. I have faced the waves that threaten to undermine the love and creativity I strive to provide. I fight fiercely for their needs, which cannot be dictated by external forces. I seek understanding and respect from those who haven’t walked my path, yet who wish to influence my journey.
Every moment of my day is dedicated to enhancing their lives. I’ve invested countless hours and resources to ensure their needs are met, often sacrificing my own in the process. Many a night has seen me awake at 3 AM, consumed with worry about their safety and wellbeing. I give them my lunch, my heart, my smiles, and even my tears.
I do this because each one of them is mine.
They are my children.
And I am their teacher.
