Reflections on BlogHer: A High School Reunion

BlogHer was reminiscent of high school, albeit with a plethora of giveaways. If I think back to my teenage years, the free stuff might have been likened to sneaking alcohol and cigarettes, with everyone vying for those elusive delights. They were thrilling at the time, but the aftermath—like that first hangover—wasn’t so enjoyable.

The Personalities

In high school, there were the popular kids—some genuinely cool and others less than pleasant. You had the tech aficionados, the camera-shy introverts, the party enthusiasts, the social climbers, and the gossipmongers. There were attention-seekers and those rare individuals who seemed to have a magnetic charm that drew everyone in. The class clowns had you in stitches, while the quiet ones often turned out to be the most intriguing. All these personalities were present at BlogHer.

The Classes

Of course, there were “classes” too—some engaging, others not so much. I always found the larger lectures to be painfully dull, preferring the smaller, interactive sessions where participation was encouraged. There were even a few workshops I regretted not attending. The food options? Not the best. I often opted to sneak out for a bite instead.

The Pressure to Look Good

Then there was the constant pressure to look just right. The obsession over trendy shoes or the perfect pair of jeans overshadowed academic performance. Concerns about weight created stress, yet everyone was so absorbed in their own insecurities that they hardly noticed anyone else.

The Social Scene

The social scene was filled with raucous parties that sometimes ended prematurely, courtesy of the cops. While I enjoyed the excitement, I often preferred intimate gatherings with close friends over being in the thick of the chaos. At the end of the day, I returned to my personal sanctuary, blissfully child-free—something I didn’t fully appreciate back then.

Looking Back

In a flash, high school was behind me. Did I enjoy those years? Absolutely! I cherish the memories of laughter and friendships. Would I want to relive it? Not really. There are aspects I miss, but I’m much happier in the present. Perhaps a brief annual visit would be ideal.
