Crafting Lunches: A Parent’s Reality Check

Yesterday, while I was in the kitchen preparing sandwiches for lunch, my partner, Mark, strolled up behind me. “You don’t seem to be putting much heart into that,” he commented, as I spread jelly in a rather efficient, assembly line fashion across three pieces of bread.

“Heart?” I scoffed. “Not really.”

Maybe it’s because the kids have been munching on the same meal day in and day out for years. Maybe it’s because the moment I try to switch things up, I get back a pile of untouched food and a chorus of hungry complaints. Maybe it’s that I’m still groggy during those hectic mornings. Perhaps I’d rather be savoring their PB&J instead of my own bland Greek yogurt. Or maybe it’s the six loads of laundry waiting for my attention, alongside a mountain of dirty dishes. I show my love in a myriad of ways, and it could be any combination of these factors.

But let’s be honest: love is not the secret ingredient in their lunch boxes.

These are the lunches prepared with love. A lot of love. A whole lot of love. And maybe a sprinkle of craziness. Mine, however, are crafted out of necessity. I bet they taste just as delicious.

In summary, while love may not be the primary ingredient in my children’s lunches, the effort and care put into them are undeniable. Life as a parent is filled with challenges, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to make it work, even if it’s just through a simple sandwich.
