This morning, an article caught my eye on social media titled, “8 Instances Where Sneakers Looked Fantastic with a Dress.” I nearly celebrated—only eight? Should I be concerned? I examined the images closely. Upon reflection, I concluded that perhaps only six of those combinations truly worked; two of them seemed off. The majority featured white sneakers, which I realize I need to add to my collection, as mine are in various colors but none are white. The comments section was mixed, with some expressing disapproval—ranging from “Absolutely not” to “That’s way too ’80s.” Some even suggested that this look is suitable solely for one’s backyard. However, I aspire to wear this style beyond my backyard.
So, who grants me permission to do so? Is there a hotline I can call?
It’s commonly said that one of the perks of being in your 40s is that you start to care less about others’ opinions. I’m still waiting for that epiphany. I still care, but this might be my moment to make a stand. I hereby declare that I will never be too old to wear sneakers with a dress, and neither should you. Below are my personal examples at 49 years of age where this pairing is absolutely perfect:
1. Picnics
It’s time to pull out the Converse and pair them with a lovely sundress.
2. Anytime, if you wear Keds
Aren’t Keds a perfect match for any summer dress? I think that would keep the fashion critics at bay.
3. Semiformal summer gatherings
Imagine strolling across the lawn at an indie film gala in stylish comfort.
4. Work
Can this combo be acceptable in a professional environment? I believe it can, especially if styled correctly.
