Dear Leonard,
Though we share a unique bond through our beloved Vulcan character, our interactions have been limited—perhaps only three or four times. This makes it a bit awkward for me to reach out, as I feel I may not have much to convey. Your close friends and family certainly have more profound insights about you. Yet, the nature of film—capturing eternal moments that resonate with audiences across generations—does indeed connect us.
While this connection may not touch our true selves, it unites us as actors, humble representatives of Spock, whose legacy will endure until the day he is no longer remembered. I genuinely hope that this iconic figure, a symbol of human logic and virtue to whom we’ve devoted parts of our lives, will continue to thrive for many centuries.
I believe our first encounter took place at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas during the summer of 2009 when I was a mere 14 years old. Before our on-stage appearance with Zach Quinto, we crossed paths backstage. Although the specifics of our conversation escape me, I vividly recall your humble and gracious demeanor. I apologize for the cliché, but you truly embodied the warmth of a beloved uncle or grandfather. Everything I had heard suggested you were devoid of ego, and it was heartening to see that your fame hadn’t diminished your goodness.
Regrettably, I can’t recall the details of our discussion, yet perhaps words merely serve as channels for emotions shared between souls. I have no doubt your sentiments were nothing but kind.
Then we took the stage alongside the wonderful Zachary Quinto, facing an audience of captivated Trekkers. There’s a recording of that moment on YouTube, should you wish to revisit it. It remains one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. We stood there, three individuals with little to say, yet we represented something far greater: a saga that has firmly established itself as a cultural landmark, the enduring legacy of Spock, and the joy our character has brought to countless lives.
At one point, you remarked on my enthusiastic attempts to appear charming and articulate: “He’s not at all like he is in the movie, is he? He’s like, ya know, ‘hey, hey!’” I think that was perhaps the most insightful observation I’ve ever received. After sharing a hug with Zach, you wished us well as we exited, turning to the audience with a smile and saying, “Isn’t that great?” It truly was more remarkable than words can express.
Thank you, and the world is grateful to you for being an exceptional human being. Live long and prosper, Mr. Nimoy.
Sincerely,
Jacob Kogan
