As parents, we often find ourselves navigating a myriad of profound questions from our children. These inquiries range from the innocent to the complex, often surfacing during the most chaotic moments of our daily lives—like when we’re stuck in traffic or in the midst of preparing a meal. I’ve been asked questions like, “How does a baby get inside a tummy?” or “Why did someone shoot Martin Luther King, Jr.?” Each of these questions requires careful consideration of how much detail is appropriate for their various ages, especially when the subjects are sensitive or multifaceted.
Recently, in the midst of a typical evening rush, my eight-year-old daughter, Emily, expressed her desire to marry a famous pop star. “Mom, can I marry Taylor Swift?” she asked. With a blend of humor and seriousness, I replied, “Well, sweetheart, you might have to go elsewhere to make that legal. Perhaps you could find a way to do it in California.” As I turned to walk away, I noticed a familiar look of confusion on her face. “So, it’s against the law to marry Taylor Swift? Are we going to get arrested?”
I quickly clarified, “No, it’s not illegal, but Texas doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage.” As I contemplated how much to explain, I considered the implications of legal rights and benefits that come with marriage. “If something happened to her, you wouldn’t be entitled to her benefits in Texas,” I thought, but I kept that detail to myself.

At her age, Emily is beginning to grasp concepts of love and relationships, and I find myself reflecting on the progress society has made in recent years. As a parent, I feel grateful that my daughter is growing up in an environment where different family structures and relationships are normalized and celebrated.
