Dear Children,

It seems there has been a bit of misunderstanding, and I’d like to take this moment to clarify things. When you were younger, there were certain household tasks that were beyond your reach due to your size and maturity. However, now that you are older, there are numerous ways you can contribute around the house!

Yet, it appears that I am still carrying the bulk of the workload. I have been reflecting on why this might be the case. Perhaps it’s not simply laziness on your part, but rather genuine concern for my wellbeing. You might think that if you take on some cleaning tasks, I could feel offended. Rest assured, I have been managing these duties for years, and I’m quite comfortable with my skills.

Another possibility is that you fear I might actually enjoy some free time and get bored if you help out. Let me assure you, I have not experienced boredom since the day each of you entered my life. Any extra time would be filled with plenty of other activities.

I may have also neglected to formally give you the green light to tackle chores that were once deemed off-limits. If that’s the case, consider this your official permission!

If any of these thoughts have been holding you back from pitching in, let me clarify that I’m not the only one who can:

  • Recycle: Next time you finish a soda or snack, please drop the empty containers in the recycling bin instead of leaving them on the counter.
  • Do Laundry: I sometimes can’t wash your favorite outfits multiple times a week. Feel free to handle your own laundry anytime. I’ve already shown you how to sort, add detergent, and use the washing machine—so it should be clear!
  • Load the Dishwasher: Whenever you place dirty dishes in the sink, remember, the dishwasher is right next to it. It takes only a few more seconds to load it instead of leaving them for me.
  • Unload the Dishwasher: If you find the dishwasher full of clean dishes, it’s perfectly fine to put them away to make space for your dirty ones. It might take a bit longer than a commercial break, but you can always catch up on your shows later.
  • Vacuum: I know it used to be intimidating because of the noise, but with your earbuds, it should be much less scary now. Trust me, you’re much louder than any vacuum!
  • Scrub Toilets: I’ve cleaned up enough messes over the years, and it would make my day to see you scrub your own messes in the bathroom. If the urge strikes, go ahead and enjoy!

These are just a few examples of the many chores you could tackle. Other tasks include mopping, dusting, changing bed sheets, organizing closets, and washing windows. If you ever feel like taking on any of these responsibilities, remember that I’m always here to talk. I might be a little surprised, but I promise I won’t be upset.

I’m glad we had this conversation, and I hope it helps us move forward. Now, how about you get started on cleaning something?

Warm regards,
Mom
