To those who believe it’s acceptable to venture out with a sick child:
- Shopping at Target
- Grocery shopping
- Visiting the library
- Attending school
- Going to sports practice
- Playing at a kids’ play center
- Inviting friends over or visiting others
Let’s do some quick calculations. If your child has been unwell for a week and you have several children (let’s say four), that equates to a whole month of illness inflicted upon my family.
Now, consider the additional two weeks, as my partner and I are also likely to fall ill after being exposed to coughs, sneezes, and other germs every night because our sick child(ren) are sharing our bed. That brings us to a total of six weeks—six weeks of sleepless nights and discomfort due to your inability to wait until your child is no longer contagious.
And don’t forget to multiply that by two, as the contagion often cycles back to the first child. That’s a whopping 12 weeks—three long, exhausting months. Essentially, an entire season of winter, lost to illness.
While the timing of illnesses can vary depending on the specific virus and its incubation period, this formula generally holds true. If we factor in exponents, we might even see all the kids getting sick simultaneously, creating a perfect storm of illness.
Can we collectively agree on this? I do not require your assistance in fortifying my children’s immune systems. Please keep your sick kids at home, and I assure you, I will do the same.

Summary
Keeping sick children at home is crucial to prevent the spread of illness within families and communities. The ripple effect of one sick child can lead to extended periods of sickness for multiple households. It’s essential to prioritize health and prevent further contagion by ensuring that sick kids stay home until they’re fully recovered.
