I’ve reached a point in my life where I choose clothing based on my preferences and suitability, rather than worrying if they perfectly capture “who I am.” My focus has shifted to ensuring that my living space is cozy, appealing, and practical, without the pressure of it being a reflection of my “unique style.” I’ve realized that pondering my tastes was not particularly engaging for me.
What I found is that I continuously express myself through writing—something that genuinely captivates my interest. As a result, I no longer feel the need to fret over the aesthetics of my shoes or curtains if it doesn’t matter to me. Life is too brief to overanalyze decisions about things that don’t resonate with my true self.
Many people derive immense joy from making thoughtful choices and discovering what they genuinely love. However, it’s important to recognize a vital truth of adulthood: what brings joy to one person may not have the same effect on another. I prefer not to delve too deeply into making authentic choices for things that I don’t truly care about. In fact, social psychologist Roy Baumeister points out that the quest for “authenticity” can come at a cost, as the mental energy spent on selecting among countless options detracts from our ability to focus on other important tasks.
Interestingly, while I let go of the notion of expressing a personal style, I simultaneously reflected on my personal commitment to “Be Jamie.” These two concepts may sound alike but are fundamentally different. Ironically, after dedicating time to truly “Be Jamie,” I’ve gained a clearer understanding of my personal preferences. While I’m still not particularly motivated to alter my surroundings to reflect my tastes, I have a better grasp of what I genuinely enjoy. For example, I’ve recently become fascinated by the works of famous artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, particularly his stunning creation, Laurelton Hall. That is certainly something I appreciate.
