For those of you navigating the complexities of being a stay-at-home mom with children under five, you understand the daily struggles. It’s a relentless journey of managing a household while maintaining your composure, often feeling like you’re on the edge of losing your patience. You strive to tick just one item off your to-do list while the house seems to disintegrate around you. Picture this: just as you place the last dish in the dishwasher, your toilet overflows. Moments later, your toddler has scattered the freshly folded laundry across the floor, and you find yourself caught in a constant tug-of-war between household responsibilities and quality time with your kids.
It’s exhausting, and I’m weary of those who question our daily endeavors. The adults who leave home each day to work alongside others who don’t require frequent diaper changes have no clue just how demanding our roles are. Yes, I said demanding. To those who think stay-at-home moms have it easy, I present to you the Stay-at-Home Mom Challenge.
This challenge will not take place in your home. Instead, you will attempt it in your workplace—let’s say your name is…Tom. Here are the guidelines:
- You have three primary “employees.” We will refer to them as Employee A, B, and C.
- You cannot dismiss them.
- They must remain in the vicinity with you at all times.
- You cannot use profanity.
- You have three tasks to complete:
- Make a five-minute phone call.
- Type, print, and present a document in a meeting with five participants while your employees are present.
- Keep your office, the restroom, and one meeting room tidy throughout the day.
Ready? Go.
You will begin your day with enthusiasm and a sense of confidence. You may even feel overly assured that this will be straightforward. You’ll set up your employees in a meeting room with a simple task and, as you exit, they seem calm and cooperative. But as soon as you sit at your desk and begin working, chaos ensues.
Before you know it, you’re back in the meeting room, cleaning up after Employee C, who has turned a quiet environment into a disaster zone. With a meeting approaching, you manage to regain control, only to find that your focus is shattered again. You quickly realize that keeping your workspace organized while attending to your “employees” is a monumental challenge.
You might find moments of quiet, but they are fleeting. Even a simple trip to the restroom can become a spectacle, with your employees knocking on the door, bombarding you with questions that leave you no choice but to let them in. Your attempts to maintain professionalism while managing their antics can feel impossible.
You finally make that important phone call, only to be interrupted yet again. The noise and distractions compound, testing your patience and resolve. And as a result, the tasks you set out to accomplish feel increasingly out of reach.
If this scenario sounds familiar, it mirrors the experience of many stay-at-home moms who juggle these responsibilities every single day. The reality is that while you may only have a few hours left in your workday, for a stay-at-home mom, the responsibilities continue around the clock.
