Let’s be real: striking a balance with screen time for our kids—and for ourselves—can be a bit of a juggling act. However, when it comes to the countless ways technology simplifies our daily routines, I can’t help but sing its praises.
1. Text Messaging
How did families with multiple kids ever manage to reconnect at amusement parks before the advent of cell phones and texting? And babysitters? No one wants to play phone tag just to set up a few hours of much-needed time off. Plus, let’s face it: teenagers don’t want to talk on the phone, either! Group texts might annoy some, but they save me from having to call each friend individually to see who’s up for a spontaneous happy hour—definitely not my idea of fun.
2. Online Bill Payment
Gone are the days of stamps, envelopes, and the dreaded chore of sorting through bills, which used to consume at least half an hour of my time. Now, I simply receive an email notification that my bill has been paid. If only my computer could handle filling out my kids’ endless registration forms too!
3. Library Renewals and Holds
Is your library as amazing as mine? I can request books online and receive an alert when they’re ready for pickup. When it’s time to renew my stack of books (which often totals around 50), I simply click a button instead of dragging them all back for stamping. Some libraries even offer drive-up windows—what a game changer!
4. Drive-Thru Pharmacies
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the convenience of drive-thru pharmacies. After wrestling my kids into the pediatrician’s office, only to find out it’s strep throat, I can now let the doctor call in the prescription, pick it up from my car, and go home. Seriously, why didn’t someone think of this sooner? Now, if only we could get drive-thru grocery stores, so I could grab that gallon of milk without the hassle of dragging kids through the rain.
5. ATM Services
I found a bank that offers old-fashioned passbook accounts for my kids, which I thought would be a great way to teach them about money. However, the forms and long wait times are a serious drag. That’s why I love using the ATM—especially the drive-thru version!
6. Google Maps
No more tangled paper maps or squinting at crumpled directions from MapQuest. GPS has transformed navigation into a breeze—unless, of course, you’re in the mountains and lose your signal. Then you might wish you had a map, but that’s a different story.
7. Amazon
I can’t hide my affection for Amazon. While I love supporting local businesses, sometimes life gets in the way, and I need things quickly—like birthday gifts or kid socks. Amazon Prime is my lifesaver, offering speedy delivery for all the little (and big) things I need.
So, what am I doing with all this extra time? Engaging in delightful, productive activities, of course. And maybe just a tad bit of scrolling through social media. Okay, perhaps more than just a tad. Well, you get the picture!
