Dear Barbie,
Parting ways is seldom easy, and this farewell is particularly challenging. As I closed the lid of the Rubbermaid container sealing away your vibrant blue eyes, a wave of sadness washed over me. Your absence will surely be felt.
I want to clarify that the end of our nearly ten-year relationship is not your fault. It’s not even mine, despite my frequent grievances about your scattered wardrobe, the cluttered Dream House, and your Camper that took up residence in the basement. The reality is that our busy lives filled with soccer, piano lessons, and real horseback riding have diminished the time we could devote to our adventures together. We’ve even stopped enjoying baths, which used to be our cherished moments.
I also want to emphasize that this decision has nothing to do with your appearance. You’ve faced considerable criticism in recent years, but I’ve come to realize that I have real-life friends who mirror your striking features—slender waists, beautiful hair, and flawless makeup. Yet, these women, who excel in marathons, yoga, and healthy living, embody more than just superficial beauty. They actively volunteer, support their friends, and contribute positively to our communities. They reflect the strong, multifaceted essence that you represent.
You were never meant to be a body image role model for my children—that’s my responsibility, and I take pride in that role. Your purpose was to ignite the imaginations of my daughters, and you did that magnificently. You facilitated their ventures into running a veterinary practice, managing a school, and operating a clothing boutique. They hosted fashion shows, pool parties, and horseback riding events; they played house, nurtured dolls, and even orchestrated weddings. You were there for it all, providing endless entertainment.
Your resilience is commendable. You faced a highly publicized divorce, served in the military, endured media scrutiny, and still, at age 50, you remain a subject of comparison among dolls. Yet, you’ve maintained your poise and continued to shine.
Regrettably, Barbie, there’s no turning back. Children inevitably grow up, and it’s time for me to let go. I’ve sold the Dream House (albeit for less than it was worth), listed the car, yacht, and plane on Craigslist, and sent your companions—Skipper, the Disney Barbies, and those other brunette dolls—to Goodwill in hopes they find new homes. Even the Barbie jeep and scooter have embarked on new adventures.
Before we part, I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for allowing my kids to explore their creativity in so many ways. You’ve shown them that a ball gown can pair beautifully with cowboy boots, and you’ve embraced each story they spun for you. While your outfits may have been a bit risqué and your heels excessively high, I appreciate that we had a Barbie for every dream my children wished to explore, whether they imagined themselves as athletes, royalty, surfers, or doctors. I’m relieved we avoided your drag queen phase, but I can only imagine the fun it would have brought.
Although you’ll be temporarily stored in the attic, your legacy will remain in our hearts and minds. I hope that one day, if fortune smiles upon us, you will return to our lives when my daughters become mothers. I will welcome you back with open arms, perhaps even to a new environmentally friendly Dream House.
Despite being just a doll, you’ve represented so much more. You’ve been a conduit for imagination and creativity in our family, and you have fulfilled your role exceptionally well.
Farewell for now, Barbie. Until we meet again.
Warm regards,
Me
P.S. I’m pleased you never took Ken back; he always seemed to ride your coattails, and let’s be honest—no one’s hair looks that flawless all the time.
