The Struggles of the Early Rising Parent

It’s 7:23 AM, and I’ve already been awake for one hour and eight minutes—on a Saturday, no less. In our household, anything before 7 AM is strictly prohibited, yet here I am, despite knowing that encountering me before the sun is fully up is not advisable.

So, here I sit, one hour and ten minutes into my day, wishing it was already over so I could crawl back into bed. Alas, that’s not an option. Instead, here’s how I’ll spend my morning:

  1. Crying: Mourning the precious sleep I will never reclaim.
  2. Assessing my kids’ value on eBay: Of course, I’ll keep the ‘early risers’ part to myself.
  3. Cursing the neighbors: Their homes remain shrouded in darkness while mine is a hive of activity.
  4. Regretting my late-night TV binge: Watching just one more episode of a gripping series like “Breaking Bad” has its consequences.
  5. Scrolling through social media: Connecting with fellow tired parents in the digital realm.
  6. Formulating sleep strategies: Designing reward charts and incentive plans to keep the kids in bed until 7:00 AM—only to abandon them by next weekend when they inevitably fail.
  7. Preparing breakfast: This will lead to an early lunch at 10:30 AM.
  8. Composing a complaint to the makers of children’s clocks: My child figured out how to manipulate the “sunrise” feature on the second day of use, resulting in random wake-ups at 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, and 6:00 AM.
  9. Dreaming about my potential achievements: If only I weren’t so exhausted.
  10. Napping intermittently: And repeating this cycle throughout the day.

See you bright and early at 6:00 AM, everyone!
