The Experienced Mom’s Perspective on Parenting

The line for pizza at Costco moved surprisingly quickly for a Friday evening. I was balancing a cheese pizza in one hand while holding my three-year-old’s hand with the other. I had promised both my son and daughter a fountain drink for their patience while waiting for dinner, so all we needed to do was fill our cups and head home.

My daughter struggled to reach the drink dispenser, so I instinctively began to grab her cup to fill it with her usual lemonade. However, she was determined to do it herself. Despite my doubts about her ability to magically gain 12 inches in the next few minutes, a debate ensued.

After some back-and-forth, I found myself in the precarious position of juggling the pizza while simultaneously lifting her up to fill her cup. At that moment, a stranger came to my aid. With a warm smile and friendly brown eyes, she immediately offered to hold my pizza while I assisted my daughter in fulfilling her wish to fill her drink “by myself.”

I was immensely grateful for her assistance, and it was clear she had been in my shoes before, observing my little ones with a knowing look.

As I walked to my car, I reflected on her kind gesture, her non-judgmental demeanor, and her willingness to step in and help a fellow mother in need. Too often, women can be quick to judge one another, feeling the need to defend their choices in parenting, careers, and personal style. This competitive attitude can tear us down instead of bringing us together. I found myself wishing to be part of the supportive community of women instead.

I aspired to be that kind of mom—the one who helps another mother navigate her challenges. Whether it’s holding the door for a mom struggling with a loaded stroller or welcoming a first-time mom back to work, I want to be a source of support. I yearn to be a listening ear for those dealing with the various parenting hurdles we all face. I want to embody the spirit of the woman who helped me that day.

While it may seem like a profound realization for a trip to Costco, that brief exchange at the drink station offered me clarity. Motherhood is incredibly challenging, and every bit of support counts.
