As a mother of three energetic boys, I’ve come to embrace the term “Mama’s Boys” with warmth and affection. Once, I viewed this label through a critical lens, associating it with weakness and dependence. I believed that Mama’s Boys were overly soft, submissive, and somehow less appealing.
In my 20s, I actively avoided dating men who had strong ties to their mothers. I would think, “Who wants a guy who respects his mom? That’s just lame.” My younger self cringes at those misguided notions now. Growing up in a household filled with five sisters and one rambunctious brother, I struggled to understand boys. They seemed like chaotic creatures, often engaging in wild antics that left me exasperated.
When I entered the dating scene at 16, my experiences only reinforced my negative views about boys. My journey through relationships was fraught with heartache and disappointment. I dated a variety of men, none of whom were Mama’s Boys. They had little to no relationship with their mothers, and I thought that was just fine. I believed I could be the nurturing figure in their lives, molding them into the men I wished to see. If only I could have told my younger self to steer clear of those guys, I would have saved myself a lot of pain.
After many lessons learned through heartbreak and personal growth, I eventually opened my heart to a Mama’s Boy. This shift in my perspective has been enlightening. My sons express their love, respect, and admiration for me, and I see now that my purpose is not to “fix” men but to raise them to be kind and compassionate. My hope is that one day, my daughters-in-law will appreciate the values I’ve instilled in my boys.
