In this week’s episode of our favorite show, we find ourselves on a rollercoaster ride with characters Mike and Lisa. Last time, Mike was left heartbroken after Lisa chose to spend the night with her colleague, film producer Greg. This week, they hit the road to retrieve Lisa’s belongings from Houston and return to LA. While on the flight, Lisa is already chattering away on the phone with Greg, suggesting the trio meet up for drinks when they return. This behavior only reinforces our suspicions that Lisa might not be the most considerate person around.
Upon arriving, Mike meets Lisa’s parents, who present him with an unusual gift from their vacation—Mexican Rogaine, which they claim is superior to what’s available in the U.S. Mike is taken aback—this is how Lisa describes him to her family? Thankfully, he perks up when they mention that she considers him her emotional anchor in LA. Interesting perspective, Lisa.
Things take a turn for the absurd that night at a local bar. While Lisa is busy having a blast and dancing with the local crowd, Mike finds himself bonding with her best friend, Sarah. As they hit the dance floor, Lisa notices, and in a bout of playful jealousy, she grabs another guy and pretends to be having the time of her life. A hilarious dance-off ensues, with both Mike and Lisa trying to prove they can have fun without each other. However, Mike realizes he’s not winning this battle and decides to enjoy himself with Sarah instead. The look of disappointment on Lisa’s face is palpable as she watches.
In a twist of fate, it’s Mike who wants to stay at Sarah’s place at the end of the night. But Lisa insists on bringing him back to her home, even honking the horn in a bid to interrupt a potential kiss between Mike and Sarah. The dynamics are shifting, and Lisa is morphing into that archetypal character who, while not genuinely interested, is possessive enough to not want anyone else to have Mike. In the car, Mike accuses Lisa of being “the ultimate cockblock,” to which she retorts that it’s inappropriate for him to spend the night with her best friend. Their ride ends in stony silence.
Back in LA, Jack has arranged an elaborate romantic evening for him and his partner, Emma, at a luxurious hotel. Unfortunately, the pressure is overwhelming for their already fragile relationship. In a panic, Emma calls Lisa, pleading for a way out of a night that’s clearly spiraling toward awkwardness. Lisa, in her own tough-love style, insists she return to her partner. As they sit down to watch a movie, it appears they might opt for a platonic evening instead. But when marital obligation kicks in, they awkwardly attempt intimacy—an uncomfortable scene marked by tight camera angles and an overall lack of chemistry. They erupt into a fight, with Jack lamenting that he’s no longer the “passionate lover” he once was. The tension is thick as they both acknowledge their dissatisfaction.
By the episode’s end, there’s a half-hearted reconciliation. Jack and Emma express their desire to stay together and commit to couples therapy, while Lisa offers Mike a cheeky apology, jokingly suggesting she can make it up to him. They share an awkward hug, leaving Mike on her couch, sighing as he contemplates the evening’s events.
As viewers, we can’t help but relate to the messy realities of adult relationships. While it seems like a kiss between Mike and Lisa is inevitable, I can’t shake the feeling that Mike deserves someone who appreciates him for who he is—perhaps someone like Sarah, who genuinely connects with him rather than viewing him as a project to fix.
