For the past few weeks, I’ve been battling an illness. My throat has felt raw, my nasal passages congested, my sinuses have been uncomfortable, and I’ve been enduring a relentless cough. Given that my son was recently afflicted with strep throat and kept close company with me, it was inevitable that I would catch something. Last week, I finally sought antibiotics for a sinus infection and have been gradually recovering. Unfortunately, just as I began to feel better, my husband fell ill.
I have great affection for my husband; I genuinely consider him my soulmate, and my life would feel incomplete without him. However, when he is under the weather, I find myself fantasizing about escaping with our children to a more peaceful place. Why? Because he doesn’t leave me with any other option.
Yesterday, you would have thought he was on the verge of death. In fifty years, when he is hopefully reflecting on his life from his deathbed, I imagine he will resemble the way he did this weekend—dramatic and woeful.
“I’m sick,” he lamented, barely able to rise from bed. He managed to drive himself to the clinic for a prescription and a hefty dose of sympathy. An hour later, he called, sounding utterly defeated. “Did they give you anything?” I inquired.
“No,” he replied, sounding like a wounded animal. “The strep test was negative, and the doctor said it couldn’t be a sinus infection if it just started.”
“It’s just a cold,” I told him matter-of-factly.
