This year’s Mother’s Day was pleasant, even enjoyable. I volunteered at my church on the second Sunday of each month, supervising children aged three to six, which required me to arrive by 9 AM. Following that, I joined my family for a picnic lunch and a brief hike at a local vineyard, all under a beautiful sky. I managed to do laundry and prepare salads for both myself and my mother before heading to church.

However, as I scrolled through Facebook, I saw friends celebrating Mother’s Day with lavish weekend plans. While I shared half a day with my mother, others were reveling in long celebrations dedicated exclusively to motherhood. Naturally, this stirred feelings of frustration within me.

Each day, I share my bed, meals, and bathroom time with my children—essentially my entire existence revolves around them. I believe I deserve a day that is entirely focused on me. But then, I reminded myself that I have a mother, too.

Many friends of mine have lost their mothers, while others have mothers living far away or who simply do not prioritize spending time with their daughters and grandchildren. I feel truly fortunate to have my mother, and she certainly deserves recognition. Yet, wouldn’t it be more equitable if we could each have our own special day, especially during the years I’m deeply involved in parenting?

This year, Grandparents Day falls on September 7. I had to look it up; I knew it existed but wasn’t sure of the date. Established by Congress in 1978, Grandparents Day is a relatively recent addition to our holiday calendar and deserves more attention.

I’ve set a reminder on my phone to collaborate with my children’s schools this August to create crafts for Grandparents Day. Since the school year will still be fresh, the kids will likely be enthusiastic about participating, especially after the busy Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.

Moreover, I plan to adjust my volunteer schedule at church so that I won’t be volunteering on Mother’s Day—an occasion that should be all about me.

Are you with me, fellow mothers?

In conclusion, celebrating Grandparents Day can be a meaningful way to honor the older generation while also allowing mothers a day that focuses on their own contributions.
