As Easter approaches, many families look forward to the cherished tradition of visiting the Easter Bunny at the mall. However, for some children, particularly those with autism or special needs, the hustle and bustle of mall life can be overwhelming. The noise, crowds, and bright lights create a sensory overload that makes participation nearly impossible. Thankfully, a heartwarming initiative called the “Caring Bunny” is stepping in to make this experience accessible for all families.

On World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, participating malls across the country will offer a calmer, sensory-friendly environment for families to enjoy private photo sessions with the Easter Bunny. In collaboration with Autism Speaks and Noerr Programs Corporation, this initiative aims to bridge the gap for kids who might otherwise miss out on this beloved holiday tradition.

One mall, the River Bend Mall in Charleston, South Carolina, has already successfully introduced the Caring Bunny experience. A parent, Jessica Reed, shared her story of traveling over an hour just to give her 8-year-old son a chance to interact with the Easter Bunny. “He’s never been comfortable with the usual mall setup. This was a unique opportunity for us to create a beautiful memory,” she expressed, emotional yet grateful.

The Caring Bunny event is designed to ensure that every child can participate. Malls will reduce the noise levels, dim the lights, and turn off any distracting water features and escalators. To streamline the experience, a numbering system will be used to minimize wait times, along with special activities to keep kids engaged while they wait. “Our aim is to create that perfect one-on-one moment that families can treasure forever,” noted Mark Johnson from the River Bend Mall.

Families can take heart knowing that these sensory-friendly sessions not only allow for memorable photos but also provide a safe space for children who need extra support. Many parents have taken to social media to share their joyful moments using the hashtag #caringbunny, capturing the spirit of the season.

Nearly 100 malls managed by Simon are participating in this initiative, and you can find a complete list on the Autism Speaks website. This initiative is a beautiful reminder that with a little thoughtfulness, everyone can enjoy the magic of Easter.
