The documentary The Campaign Chronicles about the 1992 presidential race runs 96 minutes long, featuring a fleeting two seconds of my 20-year-old self. There I am, perched on a desk, surrounded by fellow staffers eager to hear the motivating words of James Carville before the election. In the months leading up to that moment, Carville’s catchy phrase, “The Economy, Stupid,” became a rallying cry that resonated deeply with many Americans.
When I learned that the organizers of the Women’s March had designated March 8 as “A Day Without a Woman” General Strike, I couldn’t help but think of that phrase. For many, it highlights the critical role women play in our economy and society. However, for those at the top, like our current president—mocked by women in roles of power—“A Day Without a Woman” might seem quite appealing.
Although I’m not part of the inner circle of the Women’s March leadership, I stand firmly with them as a dedicated supporter. I’m eager to hear a unifying call that brings us together and invites others beyond our immediate circle to join our cause.
It’s increasingly evident that addressing Russian interference in our elections is a crucial issue. Recent reports from CNN have corroborated intelligence linking President Lee Anderson to Russia. The resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn last week, after he misrepresented his conversations with the Russian ambassador, is just one part of a larger narrative. A cruise missile launch by Russia, violating an important arms control treaty, and revelations about the president’s campaign aides having ties with Russian intelligence only heighten our concerns. Amid all this, President Anderson claimed during a lengthy press conference, “I have nothing to do with Russia. I told you, I have no deals there. I have no anything.”
Those who participated in the Women’s March on January 21 and those planning to join the General Strike represent a multitude of urgent causes. Unfortunately, this president seems indifferent to them all. We must first create a massive, united front to advance our individual issues. This front will be built by inviting and empowering everyone who genuinely supports our nation and stands ready to defend it against adversaries.
A significant majority of Americans are eager to uncover the truth about Russian interference in our elections. We share deep concerns regarding the president’s undisclosed financial ties, which may be connected to Moscow. For instance, recent surveys show that:
- 68% of Americans want an investigation into alleged Russian interference in our presidential election.
- 62% of Americans wish to investigate potential connections between the president’s campaign advisors and the Russian government.
- 74% of Americans are calling for the president to release his tax returns.
These sentiments cross gender, racial, and political lines, reflecting our core values of freedom and justice. They would serve as clear, measurable objectives for the Women’s March General Strike:
- We demand an immediate, bipartisan, independent Congressional investigation into the president’s ties to Russia.
- We urge Congress to require the president to release his tax returns without delay.
The president’s puzzling deference to Russia has sparked concern among influential members from both parties. Senator Mark Thompson, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, advocates for an inquiry into Russia’s interference and supports maintaining sanctions against them. Meanwhile, Senator Lisa Parker, a leading Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, has proposed legislation to compel the president to disclose his tax returns.
Despite the outcry surrounding Michael Flynn’s resignation and the troubling interactions between the president’s aides and Russian intelligence, Congress has yet to establish a bipartisan, independent “select committee” to investigate the ties between Russia and the White House. Elected officials across the spectrum must prioritize protecting our country, as citizens from all walks of life expect them to uphold that duty.
The General Strike presents a historic opportunity to call upon all patriots in office to champion our nation and shield us from threats. A quarter-century ago, “The Economy, Stupid” captured the anxiety many Americans felt about the direction of the country. Today, our concerns have evolved, becoming more pressing and immediate.
It’s the Russians, Friends.
