I Value My Friendships, But Family Comes First

In life, nothing quite compares to the joy of spending time with family. While I cherish my friendships, I find myself gravitating toward my loved ones more than anyone else, and for good reason. After all, I’ve invested a significant amount of energy into choosing the right partner for this journey, and he’s easily my favorite person on Earth. Moreover, I’ve dedicated time to shaping my children into individuals I genuinely enjoy being around; we’re all a work in progress, but my choice will always be them.

More often than not, I opt for a cozy night in with my family over a night out with friends. Friday nights, for instance, are reserved for Project Runway Junior and popcorn at home. Yes, we might be a little quirky, but it’s our kind of fun. Similarly, on Saturday mornings, I prefer to spend time with my family rather than brunching with girlfriends. After a week of managing schedules, homework, and chores, I crave those moments of just enjoying their company before they’re off again.

Let’s be honest: hanging out with friends requires pants! Yet, when I go on vacation with my family, even their whiny moments are familiar and understandable. I’m aware of who gets hangry, who needs to eat immediately in the morning, and who can’t take their shoes off in the car. We know each other’s rhythms, quirks, and habits intimately.

I choose my family because they embody everything I didn’t know I was hoping for. They understand me completely; they know I’m cheerful yet obnoxious in the mornings, that I often doze off during movies, and that I’m a helicopter mom at the pool. They accept my flaws and love me just the same.

Despite their long-winded jokes and sticky faces, they provide more entertainment than any concert or fancy theater could offer. The reality is, time is fleeting. In what feels like the blink of an eye, my son is already 10, and my daughter is 5. I’m terrified of blinking again, so I’ll be here, propping my eyelids open with toothpicks if need be.

I choose them for our shared adventures—be it skiing, traveling, or just lounging around. Some of my favorite days are those lazy afternoons when we inflate an air mattress and pile on each other like puppies, surrounded by movies and snacks. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything.

They choose me too, at least for now. I know that soon enough, they’ll be off driving and making choices that don’t involve me. And yes, that thought brings a lump to my throat. But for now, they are mine. Our family dynamics may not be perfect, but we navigate this journey together.

So, I apologize in advance if I miss some events or outings. My priority lies in these fleeting moments with my children. I’m committed to making the most of this time before they start choosing everything else over me.
