Last night marked the premiere of the much-anticipated reality fitness series “Revenge Body” featuring Khloé Kardashian. Unfortunately, this show turned out to be one of the most superficial and disheartening entries in the weight-loss genre—an impressive feat, given the competition.
The episode opens with a charming guy named Jake. He immediately draws you in with his vibrant personality, making you wish he were your friend. However, the first scene has him trudging into his home, arms laden with Chinese takeout and donuts—because naturally, the narrative suggests that overweight individuals are simply gluttonous.
Jake shares his backstory, revealing that growing up in a small town, his struggles with his sexuality and weight led him to seek solace in food. The situation worsens when he mentions his recent breakup, where his boyfriend told him he no longer found him attractive. “I knew I had gained weight, but I didn’t think it was that bad,” he confesses tearfully. My heart breaks for Jake as he opens his food, and I find myself yelling at the screen, “You are worthy, Jake! Get out of this show and find someone who appreciates you!”
It’s hard not to imagine the producers egging Jake on to indulge in his takeout while recounting his painful breakup story. Now, with tears streaming down his face, he’s staring at his reflection, and I’m left wanting to knock on Khloé’s door, demanding, “Don’t you have enough money to create something better?”
“I see a sad, overweight person,” he states. But no! He lights up the screen with his charisma and humor. “Why are you here today?” Khloé inquires. “I want to lose weight to win my boyfriend back,” Jake replies. Hold on a second—Jake, Kyle is not your best friend. He’s a jerk! “Why did he break up with you?” Khloé presses, and Jake reveals, “He told me he wasn’t attracted to me anymore.”
To make matters worse, Jake shows off pictures of Kyle, who is just as big as he is. Seriously, Kyle? “Who do you want to get back at?” Khloé asks. Um, Kyle, obviously. Jake hopes Kyle will recognize the effort he’s putting in. At this point, I wish Khloé would say, “Jake, you’re amazing. Do this for yourself, not for Kyle.” Instead, she shares a pointless story about Kim, which adds nothing to the conversation.
Jake’s goal is to transform from a “bear” to a “muscle cub”—I guess that means from a big hairy guy to a big hairy guy with muscles? Khloé promises him access to top nutritionists and trainers, saying, “I can’t wait to see my muscle cub.”
To summarize, it feels like the show never delves deeper. It portrays Jake as merely a sad, overweight man, while Khloé’s advice remains superficial, culminating in a shallow high-five over a physical goal.
Next, we meet another contestant, Sarah, who describes herself as the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend.” Surrounded by a group of judgmental women, Sarah faces cruel fashion critiques that make me want to intervene and take her home for a cozy movie night. These so-called friends are beyond awful.
Sarah walks into a room filled with critics who tear her apart over her outfit choices, proclaiming she lacks shape and suggesting her dress is too tight. What is happening here? Do women genuinely speak to one another like this? Sarah needs new friends, not a new body.
The show then follows her to a club where her friends pressure her to dance, treating her like a circus act for merely sitting down. I’m fast-forwarding to her meeting with Khloé, hoping for some redeeming advice.
As Sarah gushes about Khloé’s beauty, she shares her struggles and insecurities. Khloé, rather insensitively, remarks that she can fix Sarah’s skin and nails with the best dermatologists. Does that even make sense? Moving on, Khloé asks what Sarah’s revenge body would look like, and when Sarah admits it’s a bikini, Khloé declares her goal is to have Sarah rocking that bikini at a pool party.
I’m at my wit’s end.
Fine, both Jake and Sarah shed a few pounds—Jake lost 30 and Sarah lost 27 in just 12 weeks. The show concludes with a glam reveal, and while they confront their pasts, the core message remains: appearances are everything. It’s disappointing to see Khloé, who has had her own struggles with body image, market her insecurities as a form of empowerment, leaving true self-worth on the sidelines.

In short, “Revenge Body” is a shallow spectacle that emphasizes physical transformations over personal growth.
