In a disturbing incident at Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights, named after the late Beastie Boys member, the community woke up to find hateful graffiti defacing the playground. However, local children quickly took action, transforming the negativity into a beautiful display of love and positivity.

Just a day after discovering swastikas and a “Go Trump” message scrawled across the park, the children banded together to cover the hateful symbols with vibrant pink hearts and uplifting messages. Inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s famous words, “Love is love is love is love is love…” they made it clear that they would not tolerate hate in their playground. One creative sign even proclaimed that the playground’s train “stops fascists.” This heartwarming response shows the resilience and kindness of our youth in the face of bigotry.

This incident is part of a troubling rise in hate crimes since the election of President-Elect Trump, a situation he has largely failed to address meaningfully, except to briefly ask for the hate to “stop.” Thankfully, the younger generation is taking matters into their own hands, illustrating that love and acceptance triumph over hate.

As a parent living nearby, I can appreciate the significance of this park, which serves as a gathering place for my children and their friends. While the name Adam Yauch may not resonate with them, his legacy as a compassionate activist and a beloved member of the Brooklyn community certainly does. It’s unfortunate that the vandals seem ignorant of who he was, as evidenced by their poorly drawn symbols of hate.

Kudos to the children who reclaimed their space with messages of hope and unity. Today, community leaders, including Councilman Leo Martinez, Rep. Emma Rodriguez, local faith leaders, and even a few members of the Beastie Boys, will gather for a “Stand Up Against Hate” rally at the park at 11:30 a.m. This event is an opportunity for all to join together in solidarity against hate.
