Stories From Our Community: A Tribute to My Grandfather

Stories From Our Community: A Tribute to My GrandfatherGet Pregnant Fast

Today, I donned my professional attire and cast my vote. I did so in memory of my grandfather, who, after being ordained as a minister in the 1930s, traveled the globe—not to impose his beliefs on others, but to understand theirs. I voted in honor of my grandmother, who faced opposition when it came to her education. Her uncle was against her attending college, but her father had stipulated in his will that she must. Although she aspired to be an engineer, the university barred her from that path, leading her to pursue mathematics instead. She became a teacher and an administrator, inspiring countless girls and boys to embrace their passion for math and science.

I also voted for my mother, who earned her Ph.D. while raising two young children and instilled in us the importance of critical thinking and standing our ground. My father, who always championed my mother’s career, made sure no one ever mistook her for just a secretary. He was proud to call her his business partner and encouraged my sisters and me to dream big—if we wanted to become president, he would have supported us without hesitation.

I cast my vote for my husband, a first-generation immigrant, who stands firmly alongside me in this journey (also supporting Hillary). I voted for my children, who represent a beautiful blend of backgrounds. For my daughter, who initially seemed indifferent to the election until she eloquently countered a friend’s misleading claims about Trump. And for my son, who proudly sports long hair and embraces being mistaken for a girl—because, after all, girls are amazing too.

This vote was for me, for love, for the world, and for each of you. If you’re interested in exploring more about community stories and experiences, check out this post here.
