We all have that daily ritual—stepping onto the scale and letting a number dictate our mood. I find myself doing this every morning, questioning why I allow a mere number to measure my worth or define my day. It’s a habit I recognize isn’t the healthiest, yet the thoughts that race through my mind about my body since becoming a parent often lean toward the unkind.
Why didn’t I do more pushups? Should I have indulged in that leftover grilled cheese? Did I really need that second glass of wine? I often think about committing to a fitness journey starting tomorrow, or perhaps I’ll embrace a life filled with green smoothies. Oh, how daunting that sounds!
In the midst of these self-critical thoughts, I tend to overlook the truly remarkable things my body accomplishes each day. It can be easy to reduce my physical self to a single number, yet I’m beginning to challenge these negative narratives and reshape my self-talk.
If you’re in the same boat, here’s a reminder: our bodies are incredibly strong and capable, deserving far more appreciation than the digits on a scale can convey. Consider this:
- Our bodies can nurture life.
- Our lips can heal with a gentle kiss.
- Our fingers comb through hair and ease the chaos that is parenthood.
- Our hands engage in endless cleaning—wiping counters, tears, and the occasional toddler mess.
- Our arms prepare meals, lifting pots and pans, even if the end result sometimes ends up in the trash.
- We vacuum, scrub, and tackle stubborn toothpaste stains (seriously, why is there always dried toothpaste on the back of the toilet?).
- Our bodies engage in playful tickles, wrestling matches, and cuddles, reminding us that connection is key.
- We jump, run, and lift, often without even trying to break a sweat.
- We witness and cheer for our kids during their endless attempts at mastering handstands and cartwheels.
- Our legs carry us up stairs, often to rescue a sleeping child from the car, hoping they’ll stay asleep just a little longer.
- We brave late-night trips to the store for children’s medicine when fevers spike.
- Our voices encourage, reprimand, and celebrate every small victory.
- We dance to ’80s music, igniting laughter and joy in our kids.
- We instinctively sense when our children are fibbing or up to something.
- Our arms stretch wide to envelop each child in a warm hug.
- We tuck them in, only to find ourselves repeating, “Please, go to sleep!”
- We comfort them through the night, even while half-asleep ourselves.
- Our ears pick up every heartbeat and whisper, tuning into their unspoken needs.
Our bodies perform the miraculous, handle the mundane, and tackle the impossible. Truly, we are remarkable beings. Moving forward, I aim to treat my body with the same kindness I would a dear friend—embracing its quirks and unique traits rather than reducing it to numbers and self-defeating thoughts.
Let’s make this commitment together—it’s time to celebrate our bodies for all they do, rather than lamenting over the scale.
