Trump or No Trump, I’m Here to Stay

As the presidential election approaches and the possibility of Trump as the Republican nominee looms, I feel compelled to share my thoughts. If Trump wins, I won’t leave.

It’s easy to declare, in moments of frustration, that we’ll simply pack our bags and seek refuge in another country, escaping the wave of hate and bigotry that seems to swell. The thought of starting anew in a place where reason prevails and tolerance flourishes is tempting, especially for those of us who possess the means—experience, resources, and a clean slate—to make such a move.

But what about the rest of our fellow citizens? Are we truly prepared to abandon them with a casual shrug, saying, “Sorry, your circumstances didn’t offer you the same opportunities”? This nation is built on the idea of equal opportunity. Trump’s campaign may be about making America “great again,” but if those of us who are privileged choose to leave, what will be left for everyone else?

I refuse to let the narrative be written that, when faced with the rise of a tyrant, we simply turned our backs and fled. I won’t give my children a reason to be ashamed of me when they learn that, instead of standing firm and supporting our neighbors, I opted for the easy route of escape.

As a white, middle-class heterosexual woman, I recognize my privilege and the responsibility that comes with it. My life is relatively uncomplicated; I have a conventional family, a supportive husband, and children who benefit from public education and services. While we may not be wealthy, we are comfortable in a time when many are struggling.

I will not abandon my community when individuals are denied basic rights, like using public restrooms based on misguided beliefs about gender. I refuse to ignore my friends who cannot marry the person they love simply because of their gender. I cannot stand idly by while entire communities face prejudice due to their faith. I won’t let voting rights, reproductive rights, or equality be stripped away based on race, class, or gender. The idea that those in need of assistance are simply lazy is one I cannot accept.

It is a small-minded perspective to consider leaving when faced with adversity while so many others are fleeing from war and famine. I will not turn my back on those who need support, nor will I retreat to a place of comfort when our nation is in turmoil.

I choose to stay and be a voice against injustice, hatred, and discrimination. I will shout in defense of my neighbors’ rights. I will quietly support friends facing repression. I will advocate for equality, education, and tolerance—all the elements that truly define a great nation.

So, no, I won’t leave if Trump wins. Instead, I will stand firm for those who have no choice but to remain and I will fight for a better future.
