Meet a young hero who has touched many hearts. Nearly three years ago, 8-year-old Jamie Thompson from Maryland made a remarkable decision to grow his hair long for a little girl facing cancer. His selfless act has not only brought joy to one child but has positively impacted several others. Now, at 10 years old, Jamie is being celebrated for his admirable gesture.
Jamie was inspired to grow his hair after witnessing his mother, Lisa, watching a heartfelt video about a 5-year-old girl named Mia Wilson, who was undergoing chemotherapy. “When I explained Mia’s situation and how cancer treatments affected her, Jamie instantly expressed his desire to grow his hair long to donate it to her,” Lisa shared.
Thus began Jamie’s journey to grow his beautiful locks. His mother noted that it took him approximately two years and five months to achieve the desired length. Tragically, during this period, Mia lost her battle with cancer in June 2015. Nevertheless, Jamie remained committed to his goal. When he finally reached the length he was satisfied with, he made the cut. Jamie’s aunt posted a powerful before-and-after photo on Twitter, which quickly garnered over 61,000 retweets and 120,000 likes—no surprise there!
The transformation was nothing short of remarkable and received tremendous support from people around the globe as well as his classmates. “The kids at school have been really accepting of him. His friends think his action is pretty cool,” Lisa mentioned. “Jamie said he’s relieved that his hair no longer gets caught in bushes when he plays outside.”
A challenge that’s understandable for a kid with long hair, but one that was absolutely worth it. Jamie’s donated hair was enough to create wigs for three children battling illness. Mia’s mother expressed her gratitude, stating, “Knowing that my sweet angel Mia continues to inspire even after her passing makes me one proud mom. Her legacy lives on.”
In recognition of his incredible kindness, Jamie will be honored with an Act of Kindness Award from Derek Anderson’s foundation, Stamina, at an upcoming gala in October. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s crucial to note that only four percent of national funding goes toward childhood cancer research, according to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
