I have a few admissions to make, and I hope you’ll bear with me as I share them. This year has been a challenging one for many of us, and I’m feeling particularly conflicted. In the midst of today’s political chaos, I know my words might not sit well with everyone, but I believe they need to be said.
Here’s the truth: I am a Christian, and I was once a registered Republican. There, I said it. I understand if you’re hesitant to continue reading, but please, stay with me. There’s more I want to express.
As someone who holds faith close to my heart, my voting choices have always been shaped by my beliefs. I strive to approach complex social issues with empathy and kindness. I want to vote in accordance with my conscience, yet I find that increasingly difficult within the Republican Party.
As I observe the current political landscape, I can’t help but ask: Are we all speaking about the same Jesus? The Jesus I know encourages hard work and compassion for the less fortunate. He supports justice and mercy but would never advocate for building walls to keep out those seeking refuge. Instead, the Jesus I know seeks to break down barriers.
The GOP often promotes the idea of being “one nation under God,” yet I firmly believe that Jesus Christ would be disheartened by the state of their politics. His message was rooted in three core tenets: Faith, Hope, and Love.
With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some current leaders. For instance, one prominent figure has claimed to owe nothing to God, asserting that he has nothing to be forgiven for. That’s not faith. Another has glorified a past when dissenters were physically removed, which is hardly a vision of hope. And yet another has labeled entire communities as “evil,” a clear departure from love.
And now, for my final admission: I am done with the Republican Party. Their leaders have co-opted my faith, politicizing it while declaring that those who disagree are “the enemy.” I acknowledge that the world is indeed troubled, but their solutions are so divided and filled with animosity that they often lead to violence.
They wave the banner of Christ while promoting an agenda that contradicts the very essence of Christianity. This distorted representation of my values is not only troubling but an affront to the inclusive spirit of the gospel of Christ. No, this is not faith, hope, or love. This is a tragic misrepresentation of a beautiful message, and I refuse to support it with my silence.
As a Christian, a mother, and a responsible citizen, I feel it is my duty to participate in elections. I will vote, but it pains me to think that Christ is somehow involved in endorsing a single candidate in this political climate. I believe He would be heartbroken by what has transpired.
If the GOP wishes to attract Christian voters, they must genuinely uphold Christian principles. This means extending love to all people—not just to those who mirror our own beliefs and backgrounds. You cannot preach hate and claim to embody love. That simply does not align with the teachings of faith.
Until the rhetoric of the GOP reflects the true values of our faith, I will take the love of Christ—and my vote—beyond the walls they seek to erect.
