As a photographer, my primary source of income revolves around my camera, which constantly requires me to switch between various lenses. Each lens offers a distinct perspective—some widen my view of the world, while others zoom in on the intimate details of human emotion. I have my go-to lenses, the ones I rely on every day, and even some that creatively distort reality, all in the name of artistic expression.
Life as a mother mirrors this experience of changing lenses daily. We all have different perspectives we use in various situations—lenses of joy, skepticism, and even those that warp our perception of reality.
A dear friend of mine recently shared her ongoing struggle with her three sons, none of whom have ever been good sleepers. For the past five years, she has faced the exhausting challenge of sleepless nights. Her youngest, a delightful baby named Max, follows in the footsteps of his brothers by staying awake long past his bedtime. In a moment of vulnerability, she posted a photo of Max peacefully snoozing on her lap, captioning it, “Mom fail – 33,425,000.”
But let’s be clear—she is far from a failure. She has poured her heart and soul into motherhood, trying every method imaginable: sleep training, expert consultations, and countless remedies. Yet, the weight of sleep deprivation often clouds her judgment, making her feel inadequate.
When we are perpetually tired, it’s easy to view ourselves through a distorted lens. Exhaustion casts a harsh light that obscures the softer nuances of our lives, making it challenging to see the beauty that surrounds us. When we perceive life through a narrow beam, we often fixate on the smallest imperfections, mistaking them for failures. But if we adjust our perspective, we can see that these minor flaws are mere blips on the radar of a much larger, vibrant picture.
Our experiences—be they related to weight, finances, relationships, or motherhood—serve as lenses that shape how we perceive our world. However, not all lenses reveal beauty; some focus too narrowly on flaws and shortcomings.
So, if you find yourself utterly worn out, I hope you have a supportive community around you to help lighten the load. If you are in pain, I wish for your friends to uplift you. And when joy finds its way into your life, may those around you celebrate with you, rather than dimming your happiness with their own skewed perspectives.
If you’re struggling to find rest or support, remember that your current lens may be stuck. It doesn’t mean your situation is as bleak as it seems. To my incredible lifelong friend, you are an amazing mother. Your family cherishes you, and I see you clearly—there is no failure in your journey.

Summary
Motherhood is a journey of shifting perspectives, much like changing camera lenses. While exhaustion can distort our view, it’s essential to recognize the broader picture of our lives. Friends, support, and understanding can help us see beyond our immediate struggles and appreciate the beauty that exists within our experiences.
