Navigating the world of parenting as a same-sex couple can feel incredibly isolating, especially when laws crafted by straight politicians or self-hating individuals make it seem like our experiences don’t matter. Being a gay parent brings its own unique challenges. While it’s easy for us to rally around one another, knowing the struggles we share, my family—a two-mama, three-kid unit—needs a broader support network.
So, let me take a moment to express my gratitude to my straight village: the wonderful men, women, parents, friends, and even those I haven’t met yet, who help me in raising my children.
First off, a huge thank you to my straight friends. They accept me for who I am. To them, my sexuality is just one facet of my identity, not the entirety of it. They stood by my partner and me as we navigated the often complicated journey to parenthood.
I also want to extend my appreciation to the straight allies out there—those open-minded individuals who have fought for equal rights and against discrimination, even when it doesn’t directly benefit them. Their compassion and respect for our community provide a glimmer of hope, and it reminds me that kindness exists.
To the straight parents who see me primarily as a fellow parent—thank you. Parenting is a tough gig. From close friends to those I’ve merely crossed paths with in a store, the camaraderie and respect I feel is invaluable. Kids have a magical way of uniting us, regardless of our differences. Trust me, toddlers can be a handful! I lean on my straight village for support, to vent my frustrations, and to share the joys of parenting.
Traveling with children can be a true equalizer between gay and straight families. Recently, my partner and I embarked on a trip from Vermont to Florida with our three kids—an almost four-year-old daughter and twin 18-month-old boys. The anticipation was overwhelming. We knew we were in for a challenge, especially with our boys being particularly active and not fond of being restrained.
During one flight, chaos ensued. My partner and one of the boys were seated far away, leaving me with our daughter and our fussy son. I could sense the frustration of the man next to me as I struggled to manage my screaming toddler. I felt your pain, sir.
Then, out of the blue, a kind mother nearby offered to help. She inquired if I was alone and, after I explained our seating arrangement, she offered her husband’s assistance. Her empathy in that moment was just what I needed to regain my composure and reset my patience. That little act of kindness reminded me that I’m not alone in this journey.
While I cherish my LGBTQ+ community, it’s those straight allies—especially the parents who have no personal stake in my fight for equality—who fuel my determination to keep pushing forward in my parenting journey. They give me hope that one day, our communities will come together, and we’ll all be simply people striving to raise our children in a loving environment.
