During my time as a parent, I’ve come to realize just how much our children observe our behavior. As adults, we need to be mindful of our actions because they have a significant impact on the next generation. If we don’t step up our game, we’re just contributing to a world filled with more entitled individuals.
For instance, if your children have made a mess with sugar packets and jelly at a restaurant, and you decide to leave without cleaning up or leaving a proper tip, that’s just not cool. Think about it: how much effort would it take to clean up jelly, ketchup, and half a salt shaker from a table? Or to gather up smashed fries and pasta from under the table? A few coins won’t begin to cover that kind of cleanup.
And if you find yourself bothered by a mother breastfeeding her child or feeding them a bottle, do everyone a favor and keep your opinions to yourself. I’ve never met a parent who changed their mind after being criticized for how they feed their child. It’s not your place to judge.
When your child misbehaves—whether they’re hitting, lying, or throwing things—it’s essential to teach them what is and isn’t acceptable behavior. It’s about instilling values so they don’t become the kind of person we all complain about.
If you’re in a public space and a child is crying, especially in a family-friendly environment, don’t be that person who complains to management. If the noise is too much for you, simply leave. And if your child is running amok during a serious moment like a wedding or church service, take them outside. There’s no need to ruin it for everyone around you.
At events like concerts or talent shows, be considerate of those behind you. Yes, take a quick picture if you like, but don’t stand up with your phone held high as if you’re part of the production team. It’s incredibly inconsiderate to everyone else trying to enjoy the performance.
And when watching kids play sports, if you’re shouting out criticism that isn’t constructive, take a breath. It’s not an Olympic trial; these are just kids learning and having fun. Your outbursts won’t improve their performance, and they might not even hear you over the excitement.
We’ve all dealt with enough inconsiderate behavior in our lives. Let’s work together to reduce that and show our kids how to be kind, understanding, and respectful individuals. They’re watching us, after all. The next time you feel tempted to act out, just pause and think about the impact it could have on them.
