9 Essential Guidelines for Parenting in Our Community

In my community, the village may not be the utopia I once imagined, but it’s the one I cherish, filled with a diverse blend of parents, friends, and even a few friendly faces from around the globe. This year, we welcomed a foreign exchange student from Brazil into our circle. Some villagers care for my children, while others have homes too cluttered for visits. Regardless, the love that envelops my kids is truly heartwarming. My single friend dotes on them as if they were her own, and their godparents shower them with affection. We are undeniably fortunate.

However, even in this supportive environment, it’s crucial to establish some ground rules. While the idea of “It Takes a Village” is appealing, certain expectations must be set to ensure my children’s well-being. Here are the nine guidelines for our village:

  1. No Secrets, Please.
Encouraging children to keep secrets is a slippery slope. It can create a divide between them and their parents, which is something we must avoid. Saying “Don’t tell Mom about this treat” might seem innocent, but it sets a dangerous precedent.
  2. Respect Their Personal Space.
Our children learn early on that their bodies are their own. This means no one should insist on hugs or kisses, nor should you tickle them if they’ve asked you to stop. Teaching them about bodily autonomy is essential for their safety now and in the future.
  3. Be Mindful of Allergies.
Every village needs to be aware of food allergies and intolerances. My kids have specific dietary restrictions, and feeding them the wrong thing can lead to days of discomfort. Familiarize yourself with their allergies, and when in doubt, opt for fruit. For instance, my son has a severe allergy to bees—so please keep the pets at a distance!
  4. Watch Your Language.
Kids are sponges; they absorb everything, including language. I’d prefer not to hear my toddler repeating inappropriate words. Also, let’s avoid negative conversations about others in front of them; we want to teach respect and kindness.
  5. Curate Their Screen Time.
We maintain strict guidelines regarding what our children can watch. If you’re in control of the TV, please ask before putting on something that might frighten them. We want to avoid nightmares at all costs!
  6. Honor Our Beliefs.
Every family has unique beliefs. While debates can be healthy, please refrain from disparaging our values or beliefs in front of my children. It’s essential to respect each other’s perspectives and maintain an open dialogue.
  7. Avoid Comparisons.
Comments like “So-and-so can do this better” can hurt. It’s vital to foster a supportive environment where kids feel valued for who they are, not how they measure up to others.
  8. Discipline with Care.
Every family has its discipline style. For us, that means no physical punishment. Instead, use gentle methods like time-outs or natural consequences. Consistency and compassion go a long way.
  9. Correct Them When Necessary.
Don’t let my kids get away with poor behavior. If they forget to say thank you or disregard instructions, kindly remind them of the proper etiquette. Sometimes hearing it from someone else can make all the difference.

While I prefer not to impose rules, these guidelines help us cultivate a nurturing, respectful community. Together, we can support each other in raising compassionate individuals. For more insights on building your family, you might find this resource on family-building options invaluable.

In summary, establishing these rules within our village is essential for fostering a happy and healthy environment for our children. Together, we can create a supportive atmosphere where everyone thrives.
