Just in time for Father’s Day, a group of fathers has discovered a whimsical way to inject some fun into the often monotonous life with infants. While babies are undeniably adorable, let’s face it—they can be a bit dull at times. They don’t do much, and much of what they do can be… less than exciting. Sure, we adore them, but the entertainment value tends to wane after the umpteenth time you witness a vacant grin, right?
Enter Life of Dad, a social media hub for parents that’s sparked a delightful trend: dads across the nation are competing to see who can stack the most Cheerios on their sleeping babies’ faces.
The craze kicked off when Jake Thompson, one of the co-founders of Life of Dad, shared a photo of his napping infant adorned with five Cheerios stacked on his head. He then threw down the gauntlet for others to try and beat his record.
In a conversation with us, Jake elaborated on the origin of the challenge. “It all began out of sheer boredom. I was stuck on the couch with my snoozing baby, and my older child had left a bowl of Cheerios nearby. I thought, why not? I placed one on his nose, then another, and as the stack grew taller, it became increasingly hilarious.” He recounted, “About a week later, I decided to turn it into a challenge and shared it as a meme on Life of Dad. I thought five was the max! I never anticipated it would catch on like this.”
And catch on it did. Jake believes the widespread appeal of the Cheerios stacking challenge lies in its universal nature. “It transcends socioeconomic and cultural boundaries. At the end of the day, all parents just want to stack cereal on their children’s faces,” he shared.
The submissions have been numerous, with some daring dads surpassing the original five Cheerios. Here’s one that truly raised the bar:
This father took it to a whole new level:
Yeah, I can’t help but laugh either. Kudos to these dads for finding a way to liven up life with a little one. I have a five-month-old myself, and let me tell you, his repertoire includes smiling, crying, eating, and pooping. I love the little guy, but sometimes it feels like I’m just waiting for him to do something more! Sure, I also have a five-year-old who provides ample entertainment—we play together, watch movies, and have actual conversations. The baby? He’s like a decorative accessory at times. But thanks to Life of Dad, he’s now a part of a fun and harmless challenge!
It’s no surprise that this trend exploded around Father’s Day, as it’s definitely a quintessential dad activity. You won’t find many moms placing Cheerios on their precious offspring’s heads! Thankfully, there hasn’t been a wave of outrage regarding this lighthearted pastime, which is a relief given the judgmental climate of parenting on social media these days.
However, as fun as it is, the challenge might backfire when the baby wakes up. It’s all laughs until your little one decides it’s time for a good cry, and suddenly, the joke’s on dad.
