When my brother Jake and his partner Lisa visited one chilly evening to share the news of their pregnancy, I was over the moon. Sure, the prospect of a new addition to the family was thrilling, and I was genuinely happy for them, but what really excited me was the thought of my own kids—who were just a toddler and an infant at the time—growing up alongside their cousins. This was something I never experienced, and I couldn’t wait to see how it would shape their lives.
Fast forward nine years, and now we have seven kids between my two siblings and me. Watching them grow together has brought immense joy to all of us. Here are a few invaluable gifts that come from growing up with cousins:
- Stronger Sisterly Bonds
Not only do we gather like a lively bunch of fish, watching our kids frolic and play, but we also share our experiences on everything from childbirth to toddler tantrums. My siblings offer their honest opinions when I need them, and we’re always there for each other as a much-needed escape. Whether it’s sharing a meal or just venting, we cherish these moments until it’s time to head back to our little ones. - Sleepover Fun
My children are fortunate enough to enjoy sleepovers, and I have complete peace of mind knowing they are safe. I don’t have to send endless texts to check in, as my siblings understand my need for reassurance and often send pictures of the fun. Plus, they are always straightforward, letting me know when it’s time to pick up my child. - An Unbreakable Connection
Growing up together creates a bond that is deeper than mere friendship. They share an understanding that comes from never knowing life apart. My daughter, who doesn’t have a sister, has a cousin who is her best friend. They’ve made promises to be each other’s maid of honor, invented their own secret language, and frequently swap clothes. It’s a joy to watch. - A United Front
If one cousin is in trouble, the others are right there ready to defend them. Trust me, if you cross one cousin, you’ll have to answer to the whole crew, especially if they’re picking on the youngest. It’s a lesson that no kid is likely to forget. - Shared Experiences
As they grow older, they’ll inevitably encounter family dysfunction—something we all experience in some form. However, they will always have each other to relate to when discussing their unique family dynamics. “Why on earth did Aunt Lisa lose her cool again?” will be a question they can ponder together, providing each other with a safe outlet for their thoughts.
While I’m not rushing the years, I eagerly anticipate the day they reflect on what their childhood together has meant to them. I suspect the answer will be everything.
