It’s a universal truth: if I have a snack, it becomes a communal treasure. While I usually don’t mind sharing, there are days when I crave a bit of solitude with my treats. Sometimes, it’s all about savoring that 32-piece assortment of decadent chocolates all to myself. Last holiday season, I purchased several boxes of those delightful confections as gifts, but I managed to cleverly stash and enjoy them without anyone catching on—even when my partner pointed out what he thought were “tiny mouse droppings” on the guest bed pillows, which were, of course, just the remnants of a dark chocolate truffle I had stealthily whisked away earlier. I just dimmed the lights and left him to ponder.
Over the years, I’ve unearthed some foolproof hiding spots for my candy stash that I’m eager to share with all the new parents who are navigating the toddler years—those in desperate need of a sweet escape, even if it’s just for a mini chocolate bar and a moment of peace. Here are some of my favorite hiding places:
- Tucked inside an empty paint can, concealed beneath a stack of full ones in the utility room.
- Anywhere in the laundry room—it’s like a no-fly zone for most people.
- At the bottom of a box of granola cereal, which no one dares to touch, much like a jogger avoiding a dead skunk on a hot day.
- Beneath my old maternity underwear in the second-to-last dresser drawer.
- Behind cleaning supplies like 409 and Windex.
- Under my side of the bed, wedged neatly in the bed frame slats.
- Hidden within a bag of frozen vegetables in the freezer.
- On the top shelf in the far corner of the baby’s closet.
- Among old tax returns and miscellaneous paperwork.
- Inside my folded socks in the dresser drawer.
- Under the pillows on the guest bed, where those playful “mice” seem to leave their chocolate sprinkle evidence.
- Inside the garment bag housing my wedding dress.
- In the drawer that holds my 3-year-old’s pants—she hasn’t willingly worn pants since she turned two.
- Stuffed into the hole of the plastic wrap on an unused yoga mat I received as a gift years ago.
- In the back of the fridge, inside a container labeled “leftovers 4/15/2010.”
- Anywhere in the car—if it’s anything like mine, you wouldn’t want to go searching there.
- Within the depths of the diaper bag, which is evidently less appealing to dig through than my purse.
- Inside shoeboxes labeled “coupons.”
- Anywhere in the Christmas decoration boxes stashed in the attic.
- Hidden in the Easter decoration boxes during the Christmas season.
So, get creative! Find those nooks where no one else dares to venture; that’s where your pirate treasure will remain safe. If you need assistance in hiding candy, I’m always ready to lend a hand. Just don’t trust me with a box of Russell Stover chocolates—however, you could use those to create a sprinkle trail leading back to the paint cans. It’ll look just like tiny mouse poop, and no one will dare approach.
