To My Kids, I Am Enough

Every day, I grapple with the notion that I may not be enough. A good enough mom, a supportive partner, a reliable friend, or a competent businesswoman. With three children under the age of five, a laundry mountain that seems to touch the ceiling, an email inbox overflowing with unanswered messages, and a collection of empty takeout containers that signal my lack of cooking, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

However, when I glance at my children—those bright, joyful faces that light up with love and laughter—I realize that perhaps I truly am enough.

Jamie: My Eldest

Take my eldest, Jamie. I sometimes feel self-conscious about my appearance—my clothes are outdated, my hair is long overdue for a trim, and my nails? Let’s not even go there. Yet, I see Jamie spending hours excitedly trying on my clothes and shoes, beaming at her reflection and saying, “I look pretty like Mommy.” In her eyes, I am beautiful enough.

Alex: The Curious Toddler

Then there’s my curious toddler, Alex. I often worry that I’ve become boring, lacking exciting stories to share. But when I visited Alex’s preschool to talk about sea turtles, I could see the pride radiating from him as he introduced me to his friends. To him, I am interesting enough.

Charlie: The Youngest

And let’s not forget my youngest, Charlie. I often struggle with feelings of guilt for having my children so close in age, thinking I can’t give Charlie the same level of attention I dedicated to the older two. Every time I put a hand-me-down onesie on Charlie and hear that infectious giggle, I realize that to him, our family is just right.

Sometimes, I wish my body resembled what it once was before motherhood. But the moment Charlie snuggles into my neck, eyelids fluttering shut as he drifts off to sleep, I know that to him, I am home.

The reality is, our days are far from perfect. There’s chaos, stress, and the occasional meal of Cheerios for dinner. However, perhaps that’s precisely how it should be. It’s not about being the perfect mom, wife, or friend. When I watch my kids giggling as they munch on those Cheerios, I understand that to my children, I am enough.

And to all you mothers out there, remember: you are enough too.
