When it comes to parenting, we often have grand ideas about sharing our childhood favorites with our kids. One dad, Tom Martinez, was particularly excited to introduce his son to the iconic world of “Star Wars.” He envisioned epic lightsaber duels and reenactments of thrilling scenes with his little one, just like he enjoyed in his own youth.
However, when the moment finally arrived for Tom’s son to watch the films, things didn’t go as he had planned. Much to his surprise, rather than fearing Darth Vader, his son adored him. It seems that many kids today see the fearsome Sith Lord as a hero rather than a villain.
On Star Wars Day, May the Fourth, Tom thought it would be entertaining to surprise his two-year-old, Alex, by dressing up as Darth Vader. After getting the green light from his wife to possibly scare their child (for fun, of course), he donned an impressive costume and crept into Alex’s room, fully in character.
What followed was not the reaction Tom expected. Instead of trembling at the sight of the dreaded Dark Lord, little Alex boldly grabbed his toy lightsaber and prepared to duel! Rather than embracing the dark side, the spirited toddler quickly turned the tables, inviting Darth Vader to sit down and read him a story instead.
Perhaps it’s the influence of the prequels, the animated series, or just the passage of time, but Darth Vader doesn’t seem to evoke the same fear in children today. Alex clearly saw through the mask and recognized his dad underneath, proving that kids are tougher than we often give them credit for. I can relate; my own child has a knack for sneaking up on me and delivering a scare, much more than I can manage to do to him.
While Tom’s prank may not have gone according to his master plan, it’s comforting to know that the next generation seems to have the galaxy well in hand.
