Parenting is a wild ride, and sometimes our little ones catch snippets of conversations that make us cringe. Here are ten slightly embarrassing things my kids have overheard that I hope they forget.
-
Late-Night Dad Talk:
“Did you hear that?!” My husband often thinks he’s off the clock once the kids are asleep, but his comments come back to haunt us. Our son chimed in from his room, “You’re going to be in trouble if you keep talking like that, Dad!” -
Skipping Invitations:
What kid wants to hear us discussing why we’re avoiding a two-hour drive for a potluck where we don’t know anyone? “Sorry, but we can’t just eat hummus and feel awkward,” I mutter, only to realize they are listening. -
College Stories:
“Mom, what’s a keg stand?” My quick response was, “Just a fancy cake stand, sweetie!” When he pressed about a “bong,” I faltered again—“It’s like a drum, honey. Who wants ice cream?” -
Parenting Disagreements:
Even the best parenting teams have their disagreements. It’s tough when our kids overhear us discussing different approaches to raising them. I never want them to feel caught in the middle. -
Gossiping in Code:
“Promise you won’t tell your dad this,” I say, thinking I’m so clever. Of course, they reply with wide eyes, “How much will you pay me?” Ugh. -
The Fart Incident:
Nothing is more shocking to a child than realizing their mother is capable of, well, bodily functions. My son still laughs about that one! -
Chatting About Their Antics:
I often get caught sharing funny stories about their day, guilty of saying, “Did you see what they did?!” I feel bad, but kids can be hilarious! -
Santa Clauses and Mermaids:
Navigating the magic of childhood beliefs is tricky. Recently, my daughter asked, “Are mermaids real?” I thought she could handle the truth, only to remember my son’s shocked face when I said, “Nope!” -
First Words After Dad Comes Home:
The first five minutes can be chaotic. “The dog pooped everywhere, and I need a drink!” is probably not the best welcome for my husband. -
Serious Topics:
Conversations about cremation, embalming, or political figures can lead to some pretty anxious kids. Explaining these topics is no easy feat.
These are just a few awkward moments I hope my kids won’t remember. Especially that time they thought we were wrestling. Just forget about it, kids!
