Navigating the Journey of Being an Older Dad with a Toddler

When it comes to starting a family later in life, the question often arises: how old is too old? With advancements in technology and medicine, the answer could very well be “never.” However, this perspective overlooks some significant non-technical considerations.

As someone who experienced fatherhood both at 27 and again at 51, I can attest to the challenges of being an older dad. Each dash after a toddler is a reminder that arthritis and high energy levels don’t mix well. My patience wears thinner than it used to, and I often find myself yearning for the carefree days my friends seem to enjoy. After a long day at work, collapsing on the couch isn’t a viable option anymore. My hobbies, like hockey and golf, have become far less frequent.

Yet, there’s a magic in the joy of a little one who shouts, “Daddy’s home!” The delight in their eyes doesn’t fade with age. Trust me, your 16-year-old won’t muster that kind of enthusiasm without a hint of sarcasm. Taking my 10-year-old to a hockey game is just as exciting as it was 14 years ago, even if getting up at 5 a.m. feels like a monumental task now. We’ve adapted our parenting style: we hire help and embrace the idea that perfection is not the goal for our kids.

Interestingly, many parents from my generation, particularly Baby Boomers and early Gen Xers, often dream of their children growing up to be exceptional—president, famous actor, or a doctor. However, having already traversed the road to adulthood, we recognize that life can be complex. Even children who excel face their own struggles. Thus, our focus shifts towards nurturing good people who can fend for themselves and contribute positively to society. That, in itself, is a significant achievement.

Ultimately, being an older parent often means you have more resources, a broader perspective, and, admittedly, less energy. While I haven’t yet stepped into the world of grandparenting, I’ve heard it’s an experience that tops even that of being a parent. I’ll be sure to share my insights once I get there.
