As I approached my last prenatal check-up, I received the news that my baby is now the size of a cantaloupe and weighs more than most toddlers. With my due date just a week and a half away, I realized it’s time to get serious about packing my hospital bag.
First up, I tossed in my phone and charger, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, deodorant, and hairbrush. Wait, I use these daily! Okay, let’s remove those from the bag.
Next, I grabbed an oversized hoodie, some cozy slipper socks, and a pair of XXL jogging pants that I specifically bought for after giving birth. Those pants look ridiculously comfy and should fit over my cantaloupe-sized belly. On they go!
Thinking ahead, I packed a few snacks just in case the hospital food turns out to be less than appetizing—granola bars, crackers, chocolate, and a bottle of water. But then I worried about them going bad if left too long in the bag. So, I munched on the granola bars to avoid waste.
I also wanted to bring something to read during downtimes: “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” some parenting magazines, Us Weekly, and a sudoku book. But then I remembered that during my last stay, most of my time was spent napping or haggling with nurses for pain meds. Those books are heavy! Let’s ditch the bulk and just keep Us Weekly.
Ah, that chocolate… better eat it now before it melts all over the bag.
Next, I thought about items that might help me relax during labor: aromatherapy candles, soothing music on my iPod, massage oil, and a lighter. Then my partner reminded me I’m scheduled for a C-section. Right, let’s adjust that packing list!
I need to add my health insurance cards, ID, and some cash, especially for my final doctor’s appointment. I’ll need those when I’m sure I’ll get told that my baby is the size of a watermelon and ready to start shaving! Back in the wallet they go.
Don’t forget an outfit for the baby’s trip home! I found a cute sleeper but noticed a small stain on it. Time to look for another. I really like that first outfit though; it’s hard to picture my newborn in anything else. Out it goes for a wash, alongside my jogging pants, which are now covered in chocolate and crumbs.
In my quest to capture those special newborn hospital moments, I searched for my camera. Wait, when was the last time I actually used a camera? I’m not a fan of how I look in pictures, but my baby will be adorable—unless she comes out looking like Hume Cronyn from Cocoon. Still, no luck finding the camera, but I discovered more chocolate in my bag!
So, if my water breaks tonight, my bag will include:
- Slipper socks
- Us Weekly
