Easter is a delightful holiday steeped in tradition, religion, and folklore, with a quirky bunny and an abundance of candy. One of its cherished customs is the Easter egg hunt—unless, of course, it spirals into chaos due to overzealous parents who forget that this day is all about giving kids the chance to explore, have fun, and maybe wear themselves out.
A recent incident during the annual PEZ Easter egg hunt in Orange, Connecticut, exemplifies this issue. According to reports, the event had to be cut short because parents couldn’t adhere to the straightforward guidelines of an egg hunt: allow the kids to find and gather the hidden plastic eggs, be courteous to one another, and enjoy the inevitable sugar high that follows.
As Eyewitness News highlighted, PEZ’s General Manager, Robert Mitchell, mentioned that when they reminded participants about the scheduled start time, it was met with a stampede of parents rushing into the field, disregarding the rules. With a staggering 9,300 eggs hidden across three age-divided fields, there was more than enough for everyone. Yet, even with over 1,000 kids present, parents chose to bulldoze through, trampling signs and snatching eggs from other children’s baskets. This isn’t the kind of behavior we expect from adults, especially when we’re talking about a fun-filled event for children.
What’s even more troubling is that amidst this frenzy, kids were actually getting hurt. One concerned grandparent, Linda Carter, took to social media to express her outrage after her grandson was injured by an adult in the older age group. She questioned the safety measures in place and how this could happen during an event meant for children. While it’s understandable to be upset, it’s important to remember that PEZ has hosted this event successfully in the past, and the onus of responsible behavior lies with the adults.
At the end of the day, Easter egg hunts are designed to be enjoyable for kids, not a battleground for adults. Nothing in those fields, no matter how delightful the treat, is worth risking injury to a child.
